An exhibit exploring the encounter between Jewish refugee scholars and their students at the American HBCU’s as well as their impact on each other, the Civil Rights Movement and American society opened last May at the Museum of Jewish History in New York City. The exhibit, called “Beyond Swastika and Jim Crow - Jewish Refugee Scholars at Black Colleges”, tells the story of Jewish professors who fled Nazism and came to America prior to, or during, World War II, finding teaching positions at HBCU’s. One of my former Tougaloo professor and social change icon, Dr. Ernst Borinski is prominently featured in the exhibit.
