Bears win CC opener over Swarthmore, 8-7, in OT

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Ursinus College senior midfielder Eric Farris (Pottsgrove, Pa./Pottsgrove) scored his third goal 1:26 into the overtime as the Bears (5-0, 1-0 Centennial) won their Centennial Conference opener with a 8-7 win over Swarthmore (1-3, 0-1 Centennial) Wednesday afternoon.
Farris’ goal, which came in front of the cage, kept Ursinus undefeated with a 5-0 mark. That mark is the best start in the history of the program.
Five other players scored in addition to Farris, with sophomore attack David Kraus (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand), senior attack Dan Monzo (Collegeville, Pa./Spring-Ford), freshman attack Taylor Allen (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport Bluepoint), sophomore defender Mike Alfieri (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) and senior attack Pat Nagle (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) all finding the back of the cage.
Farris, Kraus, sophomore midfielder Mike Bloom (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) and sophomore midfielder Jeff Ocampo (Palm Coast, Fla./Mantanzas) each had an assist.
For Swarthmore, sophomore midfielder Max Hubbard had a game-high four goals, while senior attack Tyler Bradshaw had two.
Hubbard’s fourth goal of the game with 6:10 left in the fourth gave Swarthmore at 7-6 lead. Ursinus then forced the overtime on a goal by Kraus with 4:57 left, on an assist by Ocampo.
Trailing 2-1 to start the second quarter, Ursinus went on a three-goal run to take its largest lead of the game at 4-2 on a goal by Farris with 10:55 left. Swarthmore responded with a two-goal run as Hubbard scored with eight minutes left on an assist from sophomore midfielder John Bukawyn, followed by a goal from freshman midfielder Wes Marcik with 2:49 left.
Each team traded goals in the third period, before Ursinus took a 6-5 lead heading into the final period on a goal by Monzo off of a Farris assist with 11 seconds left.
Junior long stick midfielder Ernie Constantine (Bethpage, N.Y./St. Dominic) had six groundballs on the day for Ursinus.
In goal, freshman T.J. Magnani (Bear, Del./St. Mark’s) had eight saves, while senior goalkeeper Kevin Friedenberg had ten for the Garnet.
Ursinus travels to Franklin & Marshall on Saturday.

Bears 4-0 after 8-1 win at Eastern

ST. DAVIDS, Pa. – Ursinus scored eight straight goals as the Bears (4-0) stayed undefeated with an 8-1 win over Eastern (2-2) Saturday afternoon in a men’s lacrosse contest contested in heavy rain.
The Bears forced 22 Eagle turnovers in the win.
Senior midfielder Eric Farris (Pottsgrove, Pa./Pottsgrove) netted three goals, while sophomore attack David Kraus (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) added in two. Senior attack Dan Monzo (Collegeville, Pa./Senior-Ford), sophomore midfielder Jeff Ocampo (Palm Coast, Fla./Mantanzas) and senior attack Pat Nagle (Stony Brook, N.Y/Ward Melville) also netted goals for the Bears.
Junior long stick midfielder Ernie Constantine (Bethpage, N.Y./St. Dominic), Kraus and Monzo also picked up assists.
Farris scored his first goal with 5:56 left in the first quarter for a 1-0 lead. Nagle’s goal came with 7:35 left in the second for a 2-0 lead, followed by a goal from Ocampo with just 1:20 left to make the halftime score 3-0.
Farris’ second goal came 31 seconds into the third quarter for a 4-0 lead, followed by a goal from Kraus four minutes later to increase the lead to 5-0.
Monzo scored his first goal with 8:53 left in the third on an assist from Constantine, followed by Kraus goal with 7:11 left in the third for a 7-0 lead.
Farris got the hat trick on a man-up goal with 10:01 left in the fourth quarter.
Freshman goalkeeper T.J. Magnani (Bear, Del./Saint Mark’s) had eight saves in the win. Senior defender Matt Conway (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Germantown Academy) picked up three groundballs, while also forcing two turnovers. Ursinus will host Swarthmore on Wednesday.

DOVER, Del. – Paced by four goals from sophomore midfielder Jeff Ocampo (Palm Coast, Fla./Mantanzas), the Ursinus College men’s lacrosse team improved to 3-0 for the first time since 2007 as the Bears defeated Wesley (0-4) 9-6 on Wednesday night in non-conference play.
Ocampo scored four goals and added in an assists, while senior midfielder Eric Farris (Pottsgrove, Pa./Pottsgrove) and senior attack Dan Monzo (Collegeville, Pa./Spring-Ford) also scored two goals in the win. Farris added two assists.
Trailing 2-0 just 4:39 in, Ursinus scored five straight goals to take a 5-2 lead with 5:15 left in the third. Ocampo scored his first two goals, one with 9:07 left in the first, and his second with 12:16 left in the first half on an assist from Farris.
Ursinus scored two goals in the last 32 seconds of the half, as sophomore attack David Kraus (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) scored with 32 seconds left in the second for a 3-2 lead, followed by a goal form Ocampo with eight seconds left in the half for a 4-2 lead at intermission.
With 5:15 left in the third, Monzo scored on a goal from Farris for a 5-3 lead. Wesley would answer back, before Ursinus scored an extra man goal with nine seconds left as Monzo scored on an assist from Ocampo.
Farris scored his first goal with 9:58 left in the fourth for a 7-3 Bears lead. After Wesley added one with 4:51 left, Ocampo scored with 3:56 left, followed by a goal form Farris with 3:04 left for a 9-4 lead.
Freshman goalkeeper T.J. Magnani (Bear, Del./Saint Mark’s) had ten saves in the win, while Kraus picked up four groundballs.
Ursinus goes to Eastern on Saturday.

GRANTHAM, Pa. – Ursinus rolled out to a 9-0 first half lead as the Bears (2-0) defeated Messiah (0-2) 11-1 on Saturday afternoon in men’s lacrosse action.
The Bears scored seven times in the second period en route to the win.
For Ursinus, senior attack Dan Monzo (Collegeville, Pa./Spring-Ford) had three goals and an assist, while senior midfielder Eric Farris (Pottsgrove, Pa./Pottsgrove) had two goals and two assists. Senior attack Pat Nagle (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville), junior midfielder Pat Gillen (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun) and sophomore attack Jeff Ocampo (Palm Coast, Fla./Mantanzas) also had two goals in the win.

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Three different Ursinus players scored two goals each as the Bears (1-0) defeated Marymount (Va.) (1-2) 11-8 on Wednesday afternoon in men’s lacrosse play. It was the season opener for Ursinus.
Senior midfielder Eric Farris (Pottsgrove, Pa./Pottsgrove), sophomore attack Dan Monzo (Collegeville, Pa./Spring-Ford), sophomore attack David Kraus (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) and sophomore midfielder Jeff Ocampo (Palm Coast, Fla./Mantanzas) each had two goals in the win. Ursinus rattled off 33 shots, while forcing 22 Saint turnovers.
Senior attack Pat Nagle (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) had two assists for the Bears.
For Marymount, sophomore midfielder Drew Phillips had three goals, while junior attack Chris Wascak had two goals and an assist.
Ursinus scored three times in the first three quarters to build a 9-3 lead heading into the fourth quarter. The Bears would go up 11-5 with 9:35 left, before the Saints put together a small rally with three straight goals to end the game.
Freshman goalkeeper T.J. Magnani (Bear, Del./Saint Mark’s) recorded 13 saves in his first collegiate game. He also had a team-high seven groundballs, while junior long stick midfielder Ernie Constantine (Bethpage, N.Y./St. Dominic) had five. Junior defender Tom Adelsberger (Sea Isle City, N.J./St. Augustine Prep) along with Constantine had three caused turnovers.
For the Saints, sophomore goalkeeper Ross Fernandez had 13 saves, while sophomore midfielder Joe Rafferty had a game-high ten groundballs. Rafferty also won 17-of-22 faceoffs on the day.
Ursinus heads to Messiah on Saturday.

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Ursinus College men’s lacrosse head coach Jamie Steele has announced the hiring of David Page as an assistant coach. Page comes to Ursinus from Kenyon College, where he earned his undergraduate degree in American History.
“I am very excited to have Dave join our staff. He is an extremely hard worker and will be a huge asset working with our goalies and defense,” said Steele.
He was a three-year starting goalie for Kenyon and team captain his senior season. Over his career he had a 60.1 save percentage and allowed 7.6 goals per game. He was in the NCAA tournament two times, and finished second all-time in Kenyon history in goals against average.
In 2009, Page was awarded first team all-league. He also earned second team all-league honors in 2008.
He was also named player of the week by NCAC, and was a three-time James A. Buffalin Award winner as Defensive MVP at Kenyon.
Ursinus begins the 2010 season playing at Messiah College on Saturday, February 27.

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Ursinus College men’s lacrosse coach Jamie Steele has announced the hiring of Gary Mercadante as assistant coach for the men’s lacrosse program. Mercadante is no stranger to the Centennial, as he recently graduated from Dickinson College with a degree in American Studies. He served as captain for the team for the past two seasons, and was the team’s Rookie of the Year in 2006. “We are very excited about Gary joining our coaching staff,” said Steele. “Everyone I spoke with about Gary cited his work ethic, integrity and leadership. That is exactly what I was looking for to fill this position. He will be a tremendous addition to both our team and the Ursinus College community as a whole.” He has been an instructor at several camps along the East Coast, including the Tier I Lacrosse Camp in nearby Haverford. Aside from his lacrosse background, Mercadante has been very active in community service projects. In 2006, he helped rebuild the Plaquemines Parish community in southern Louisiana which was devastated by Hurricane Katrina. In January 2008, he provided help to the Native American Academy in Albuquerque, New Mexico, during the “Make a Difference Tour”. He was involved in a variety of work projects during the day and taught lacrosse to children along with the entire Dickinson team. Ursinus opens the 2010 season on Saturday, February 27 at Messiah. COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College athletic department has announced the appointment of Jamie Steele as men’s lacrosse head coach. Steele served as interim coach for the program since mid-March. Steele comes to Ursinus from Haverford College, where he served as an assistant coach for the men’s lacrosse program in the role of offensive coordinator. He is no stranger to the area, as Steele was head coach for six seasons at nearby Widener University. While at Widener, Steele posted a 65-31 record, leading the Pioneers to four Middle Atlantic Conference championships. The team advanced to the NCAA Division III Championship tournament four times. He also led Widener to the school’s first win in the tournament in 2006. During that season, the program posted 13 wins, which was a school record. He is the all-time wins leader at Widener. He was a convention speaker at the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association in 2002 and served on the NCAA Regional Ranking Committee from 2004 to 2006. He has also played in the Centennial Conference, serving as captain for the Gettysburg College men’s lacrosse squad in 1994. That season, the Bullets advanced to the NCAA Division III semifinals, while winning the Centennial Conference crown. Steele returned to Gettysburg in 1996, serving as an assistant coach for the program as defensive coordinator. During the 1999 season, the team set a Centennial Conference record for fewest goals in a season. Steele is a 1994 graduate of Gettysburg College with a degree in sociology, and earned his master’s degree from McDaniel in 1999 in physical education with a concentration in athletic administration.

LANCASTER, Pa. – Two members of the Ursinus College men’s lacrosse team were named to the All-Centennial squad on Tuesday afternoon. The team is voted upon by the conference’s head coaches at their year-end meeting, who are not allowed to vote for their own players. Junior midfielder Eric Farris (Pottstown, PA/Pottsgrove) was named to the second-team, while senior goalkeeper Tony Aquilino (Abington, PA/Archbishop Wood) was named honorable mention. Farris, making his first appearance on the team, appeared in all 15 matches with a team-high 28 goals and 34 points. He had a season-high seven points in a win over Susquehanna on April 15, while tying for the season-high in goals in a game with six against nationally-ranked Stevenson back on March 7. He finished ranked sixth in the Centennial in goals per game at 1.87, while 12th in the conference in points per game at 2.27. Aquilino, a repeat honorable mention selection from last season, played all but 6:43 this season for the Bears in goal, coming just two saves shy of the 200 mark, while posting a 8.87 goals against average. He turned away a season-high 24 shots against Dickinson on April 18. His save percentage of 59.3 was fourth-highest in the Centennial, while his 12.93 saves per game average was second best among conference goalkeepers.

Bears fall in overtime to Muhlenberg, 8-7

ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Trailing 5-2 at halftime, Muhlenberg forced an extra period by scoring with one second left in the fourth quarter. The Mules (5-8, 4-4 Centennial) then scored with just nine ticks left in the first overtime in an 8-7 win over Ursinus (6-9, 2-6 Centennial) on a blazing hot Saturday afternoon in Allentown. Andrew Lolley, who assisted on the goal that sent the match to overtime, scored the game-winning goal with nine seconds left in overtime for the win. Ursinus darted out to a 5-1 lead with 9:31 left to go in the second quarter as freshman midfielder Jeff Ocampo (Palm Coast, FL/Mantanzas) scored his second goal of the game unassisted. Ocampo finished with a team-high four goals on the afternoon along with one assist. After the Mules scored with 8:34 left in the third quarter to cut the Bears lead to 5-3, Ursinus went back up 6-3 on an extra man goal by Ocampo, which was assisted by freshman midfielder David Kraus (Madison, CT/Daniel Hand) . Muhlenberg would then score three straight goals to tie the score at 6-all with 8:18 left, before Ocampo scored with 56 seconds left in the fourth unassisted to give Ursinus a 7-6 lead. Ari Jacobson then scored on the Lolley assist with just one second left in the fourth to force overtime. Junior attack Eric Farris (Pottstown, PA/Pottsgrove), junior attack Pat Nagle (Stony Brook, NY/Ward Melville) and sophomore Pat Gillen (Merrick, NY/Calhoun) also had goals on the day for Ursinus, while sophomore midfielder Tony Ubertaccio (Green Village, NY/Delbarton) also added in an assist. Sophomore midfielder Graig Gallo (Winter Springs, FL/Winter Springs), who also had a team-high six groundballs, was 10-for-15 on faceoffs on the day. ST. MARY’S CITY, Md. – Three different players scored two goals each as Ursinus (6-8) scored an 11-10 win over St. Mary’s (Md.) (7-7) Wednesday afternoon in non-conference men’s lacrosse action. Senior attack Jason Orlando (Morton, PA/Springfield), freshman midfielder Jeff Ocampo (Palm Coast, FL/Mantanzas) and freshman midfielder David Kraus (Madison, CT/Daniel Hand) had two goals each as Ursinus connected on 11 of its 23 shots for goals. Junior attack Dan Monzo (Collegeville, PA/Spring-Ford) had a goal and an assist in the win, Ursinus’ third straight victory. Ursinus pulled away from the Seahawks in the fourth quarter as with the team’s tied up at 9-all, sophomore midfielder Pat Gillen (Merrick, NY/Calhoun) scored a goal with 6:12 unassisted for a 10-9 lead. Sophomore midfielder Matt Angle (Manchester, MD/North Carroll) then scored a goal with 4:07 left in the fourth, on a junior midfielder Jake West (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern) assist, for an 11-9 lead. The Bears had trailed 4-2 at the end of the first quarter. Sophomore midfielder Tony Ubertaccio (Green Village, NY/Delbarton) and junior attack Eric Farris (Pottsgrove, PA/Pottsgrove) also had goals in the win, while Orlando added in an assist. Defensively, the Bears forced 14 turnovers while Angle picked up four groundballs. Senior goalkeeper Tony Aquilino (Abington, PA/Archbishop Wood) had another great performance, making 11 saves. COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College men’s lacrosse team saved the best for last. Playing in front a large crowd on Senior Day, the Bears (5-8, 2-5 Centennial) raced out to a 9-2 lead after three quarters and fended off a late Dickinson (6-7, 2-5 Centennial) charge in a 10-8 win over the Red Devils Saturday afternoon. While it was Senior Day, freshmen made headlines as midfielder Jeff Ocampo (Palm Coast, FL/Mantanzas) netted six goals, while midfielder David Kraus (Madison, CT/Daniel Hand) scored three in the win. Junior attack Eric Farris (Pottsgrove, PA/Pottsgrove) had a goal, while senior Jason Orlando (Morton, PA/Springfield) had two assists. Junior midfielder Tom Walsh (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown West) had an assist as well. The Bears defensive unit really turned up the heat on the warm, spring day. The Bears forced 16 Red Devil turnovers. Another senior, goalkeeper Tony Aquilino (Abington, PA/Archbishop Wood) had 24 saves on the day for the Bears. Ursinus also excelled at midfield, winning 13-of-21 faceoffs, with sophomore midfielder Graig Gallo (Winter Springs, FL/Winter Springs) winning seven faceoffs. The Bears scored the opening three goals of the game as Ocampo scored the game’s lone goal in the first quarter at 11:24 for a 1-0 lead. He then scored the Bears’ lone extra-man goal at 14:04 unassisted for a 2-0 lead. Farris netted his lone goal on an Orlando assist at 13:04 for a 3-0 lead. Dickinson’s Ted Sirvaitis scored the Red Devils only goal of the first half at 8:43 left to cut the deficit to 3-1. From there, Ursinus scored the next four goals for a 7-1 lead with 10:33 left in the third quarter. Dickinson mounted its final charge in the fourth quarter. Trailing 9-2, the Red Devils scored three straight goals to get within four at 9-5. Ocampo scored his final goal of the game at 10:59 for a 10-5 edge. The Red Devils got three goals, including one with 18 ticks left, but, could not get any closer than the final 10-8 margin. Junior defender Matt Conway (Plymouth Meeting, PA/Germantown Academy) scooped up seven groundballs for Ursinus, who goes to St. Mary’s on Wednesday.

The win snapped a five-match losing streak. Ursinus, who never trailed in the game, had two extra-man goals and scored three straight goals heading into the fourth quarter to pull away from the Crusaders. Junior attack Dan Monzo (Collegeville, PA/Spring-Ford) had two goals in the match, while freshman midfielder David Kraus (Madison, CT/Daniel Hand) had a goal and three assists. COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Eighth-ranked Gettysburg got three goals each from senior attack Zach Pucci and sophomore midfielder Andrew Ryan as the Bullets (9-3, 5-1 Centennial) doubled up Ursinus (3-8, 1-5 Centennial) 12-6 Saturday afternoon in men’s lacrosse play. Pucci also added in an assist for Gettysburg, who scored five straight goals in the second half to pull away from the Bears. For Ursinus, junior attack Eric Farris (Pottsgrove, PA/Pottsgrove) had three goals, while freshman midfielder Jeff Ocampo (Palm Coast, FL/Mantanzas) had a goal and an assist in the loss. Gettysburg took a 3-0 lead in the first quarter, before Ursinus got on the board with 3:47 to go as freshman midfielder David Kraus (Madison, CT/Daniel Hand) scored on an assist from sophomore midfielder Jeff Leonard (Ambler, PA/Germantown Academy). Gettysburg took a 4-1 lead at the end of the quarter as Pucci scored with just .1 seconds left on an pass from senior midfielder Tom O’Donnell. Trailing 6-1, Ursinus got back-to-back goals from Farris, his last one coming with 2:47 left on an assist from sophomore midfielder Tony Ubertaccio (Green Village, NY/Delbarton) to cut the deficit in half to 6-3. Once again, Gettysburg scored in the final moments of the quarter, getting a goal from sophomore midfielder Danno Lynch with 30 seconds left for a 7-3 halftime lead. Ursinus got two goals to start the second half, as Ocampo scored with 8:39 left to cut the lead to 7-4, followed by an extra-man goal from Farris at 7:51 to get within two. The Gettysburg five-goal run started as the Bullets scored a short-handed goal with 7:23 left as O’Donnell scored his second goal of the day. Ryan would score with 10:27 left in the game, followed by two goals from Pucci at 9:30 and 5:51 left for an 11-5 lead. For Ursinus, junior attack Eric Farris (Pottsgrove, PA/Pottsgrove) had a goal and an assist, while freshman midfielder Jeff Ocampo (Palm Coast, FL/Mantanzas), senior attack Jason Orlando (Morton, PA/Springfield) and junior attack Dan Monzo (Collegeville, PA/Spring-Ford) each had a goal. Farris, sophomore midfielder Pat Gillen (Merrick, NY/Calhoun) and freshman midfielder David Kraus (Madison, CT/Daniel Hand) had assists. Trailing 8-0 with 1:17 left in the second, Orlando scored the team’s first goal with 20 seconds left unassisted. In the third quarter, Ocampo scored an extra man goal on a Kraus assist to cut the deficit to 8-2. Haverford could put two more goals on the board, before Ursinus cut the deficit to 10-4 as Monzo scored on a Farris assist with 45 seconds left in the third. COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall senior midfielder Noah Wilkinsky scored a goal with 1:02 remaining in the first overtime as the Diplomats (3-5, 1-2 Centennial) defeated Ursinus (3-6, 1-3 Centennial) 7-6 on a rainy Wednesday night in Centennial Conference men’s lacrosse play. Wilkinsky’s goal was one of 39 shots on the night for the Dips, who outshot the Bears 39-14. Trailing 3-0 in the first period, a five-goal run propelled Ursinus to a 5-3 lead at the end of the first half. Junior attack Eric Farris (Pottsgrove, PA/Pottsgrove) had two goals in the first half. F&M darted out to a 3-0 lead with 4:34 left in the first quarter. Freshman attack Kevin Kilpatrick scored at 12:09 on an assist from freshman attack Colin McKew. Sophomore midfielder Jeff Ritter scored unassisted at 6:46 for a 2-0 lead. The final goal of the run came at 4:34 as senior attack Mark Hild scored on an assist by senior midfielder Brett Leppert. Ursinus got on the board with 4:15 on the clock in the first as junior attack Pat Nagle (Stony Brook, NY/Ward Melville) scored unassisted. Farris then scored his first goal with 2:47 left on an assist from Nagle. In the second quarter, Ursinus tied the score with 10:32 left as sophomore midfielder Pat Gillen (Merrick, NY/Calhoun) an extra-man goal on an assist from freshman midfielder David Kraus (Madison, CT/Daniel Hand). Farris then scored his second goal of the day at 7:13 unassisted for a 4-3 lead, followed by a spectacular goal by sophomore midfielder Ernie Constantine (Bethpage, NY/St. Dominic). Constantine launched the ball from midfield over the F&M defense into the back of the cage for his first goal of the season. In the third quarter, F&M got back on the board as freshman midfielder James Wenk scored on an assist from Ritter, to cut the UC lead to 5-4. Sophomore attack Phillip Dimin scored on a Hild assist at 11:56 to tie the score at 5-all, followed by a goal from Kilpatrick at 3:23 in the third to give the Dips at 6-5 lead. Ursinus tied the score at 6-all with 1:43 in the third on a goal by Kraus on an assist from Farris. Ursinus senior goalkeeper Tony Aquilino (Abington, PA/Archbishop Wood) had 11 saves, while Diplomat goalkeeper junior Chris Marcozzi had six saves. Defensively, Aquilino grabbed ten groundballs for Ursinus, with Marcozzi netting five for the Diplomats. Ursinus will travel to Haverford next Wednesday.

Ursinus trailed 2-0 with 6:22 left in the first quarter, before getting on the board when junior attack Dan Monzo (Collegeville, PA/Spring-Ford) scored with 6:08 left in the first on an assist from sophomore midfielder Matt Angle (Manchester, MD/North Carroll). Ursinus got on the board one more time in the first half, scoring with 29 ticks left in the second quarter when sophomore midfielder Pat Gillen (Merrick, NY/Calhoun) scored unassisted to cut the deficit to 6-2. McDaniel scored all four goals in the third quarter to go up 10-2. Ursinus made one final run in the fourth, scoring three straight goals to get within 10-5. O’Connor scored both goals unassisted at 6:53 and 2:07 in the fourth quarter as the Shoremen improved to 6-1 all-time against Ursinus. Senior attack Jimmy Kielek added two goals and an assist for the Shoremen. For Ursinus, five players scored goals as junior attack Pat Nagle (Stony Brook, NY/Ward Melville), senior attack Jason Orlando (Morton, PA/Springfield), freshman midfielder David Kraus (Madison, CT/Daniel Hand), sophomore midfielder Pat Gillen (Merrick, NY/Calhoun) and junior attack Dan Monzo (Collegeville, PA/Spring-Ford) each registered a goal. Ursinus then scored an extra-man goal at 7:02 as Kraus scored his third goal of the season on an assist from Bean to tie the score at 3-all. Washington took a 4-3 lead into halftime as Kielek scored his 17th goal of the season with just ten seconds left on a Rixey assist. Just 1:24 into the third quarter, junior attack Brendan O’Leary scored his 17th goal of the season on an assist by Kielek for a 5-3 lead. Ursinus would tie the score at 5-all heading into the fourth as Gillen scored his seventh goal of the season on an assist by Farris with 8:02 left in the third to cut the deficit to one. Nagle would tie the score at 5-all with 2:18 left in the third on an assist by Bean. Ursinus, who was 25-for-26 on clears, got 15 saves from senior goalkeeper Tony Aquilino (Abington, PA/Archbishop Wood). Washington senior goalkeeper Gordon Cohen made 13 saves in 59:48 of work. Jamie Steele named interim head men's lacrosse coach

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College athletic department has announced the appointment of Jamie Steele as interim men’s lacrosse head coach. Steele comes to Ursinus from Haverford College, where he served as an assistant coach for the men’s lacrosse program in the role of offensive coordinator. “To have someone as Jamie be the leader of our men’s program is outstanding,” said Ursinus College athletic director Brian Thomas. “His lacrosse pedigree will be a valued addition to our staff.” He is no stranger to the area, as Steele was head coach for six seasons at nearby Widener University. While at Widener, Steele posted a 65-31 record, leading the Pioneers to four Middle Atlantic Conference championships. The team advanced to the NCAA Division III Championship tournament four times. He also led Widener to the school’s first win in the tournament in 2006. During that season, the program posted 13 wins, which was a school record. He is the all-time wins leader at Widener. He was a convention speaker at the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association in 2002 and served on the NCAA Regional Ranking Committee from 2004 to 2006. He has also played in the Centennial Conference, serving as captain for the Gettysburg College men’s lacrosse squad in 1994. That season, the Bullets advanced to the NCAA Division III semifinals, while winning the Centennial Conference crown. Steele returned to Gettysburg in 1996, serving as an assistant coach for the program as defensive coordinator. During the 1999 season, the team set a Centennial Conference record for fewest goals in a season. Steele is a 1994 graduate of Gettysburg College with a degree in sociology, and earned his master’s degree from McDaniel in 1999 in physical education with a concentration in athletic administration.

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Ursinus College men’s lacrosse team raced out to a 5-0 lead in the first half, and added two goals in the fourth quarter in an 8-5 win over Swarthmore in Centennial Conference play. The Bears upped their mark to 2-4 and won their Centennial opener, while Swarthmore fell to 1-3. Junior attack Dan Monzo (Collegeville, PA/Spring-Ford) had three goals for the Bears, while senior attack Jason Orlando (Morton, PA/Springfield) added in two scores. Freshman midfielder David Kraus (Madison, CT/Daniel Hand) had a goal and two assists for Ursinus. For the Garnet, Max Hubbard came off the bench to score two goals. Kraus’ first goal came with 5:12 left on the clock in the first quarter, followed by a goal from sophomore midfielder Tony Ubertaccio (Green Village, NJ/Delbarton) on an assist from sophomore Pat Gillen (Merrick, NY/Calhoun) with 1:23 left in the opening quarter for a 2-0 lead. Orlando’s first goal came at 6:51 left in the second, which was an extra-man goal for a 3-0 lead. The lead grew to 4-0 as Orlando scored with 5:30 left. Monzo’s first goal came at 4:14 left in the second, giving Ursinus a 5-0 halftime lead. Swarthmore got on the board with two goals in the third, as Hubbard scored at 11:06 followed by Ben Young at 10:53. Ursinus got another extra-man goal at 7:03 left as junior attack Eric Farris (Pottsgrove, PA/Pottsgrove) scored off of a Kraus assist for a 6-2 lead. The Garnet cut the Ursinus lead to 6-4, as Hubbard scored goal two of the day at 2:05 left in the third, followed by a goal from Stelios Wilson at 13:37 left in the fourth. Monzo added goal number two and three in the fourth. Goal number two came with 7:46 left off of a junior midfielder Tom Walsh (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown West) assist, the latter goal coming at 4:57 on a Farris assist. Defensively, Ursinus had 41 groundballs to Swarthmore’s 25, and forced 24 Garnet turnovers. COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Sixth-ranked Stevenson University put four goals on the board in every quarter as the Mustangs (4-0) defeated Ursinus (1-2) 16-7 Saturday afternoon in men’s lacrosse action at Ursinus College. For Ursinus, junior attack Eric Farris scored a game-high six goals. Ursinus struck first as Farris scored his fifth goal of the season with 12:51 left in the first period on an assist from sophomore midfielder Pat Gillen. Stevenson would tie the score at 10:48 when Nicola Bevacqua scored his second goal of the season on an assist from Greg Furshman. Farris netted goal number two on the day at 9:06 unassisted, giving the Bears a 2-1 lead. With eight minutes left in the first, Furshman got on the board as Bevacqua returned the favor, by assisting on his goal tying the score at 2-all. Stevenson then scored two straight goals, the first coming from Brian Badolato with 4:57 left, then Bevacqua scored his second goal of the game at 4:12 on an assist from Brett Yoder, giving the Mustangs a 4-2 lead. Stevenson opened up the second quarter with a 5-2 goal as the Mustangs scored just seven seconds in as Austin Hale scored on an assist from Steve Kazimer. The lead grew to 6-2 with 9:09 left in the first half as Bevacqua scored on an assist from Kazimer. Jimmy Dailey’s goal with 7:59 left in the second quarter gave the Mustangs a 7-2 lead. Ursinus stopped the run with a goal from Farris at 6:12 on an assist from junior attack Dan Monzo, making the score 7-3. At the start of the third quarter, Stevenson got on the board with an extra-man goal at 13:56 from Yoder. Kazimer had the assist to make the score 9-3. Richie Ford would later score his sixth goal of the season at 11:20 as the Mustangs took a 10-3 lead in the third quarter. Farris netted goal number four on the day for Ursinus with 6:02 left in the third, on an assist from Pat Gillen, cutting the deficit to 11-4. The Mustangs answered back with a goal from Ford at 5:43 to make the score 12-4, but, Monzo scored a goal for the Bears with just one second left in the third, making the score 12-5. Ford scored another goal for Stevenson, just 57 seconds into the fourth, for a 13-5 lead. Stevenson would add three more goals in the fourth, including two extra-man scores to take at 16-5 lead with 7:21 left. The Bears would tack on two final goals with as Farris netted goals number five and six, both on an extra-man opportunity, for the final score of 16-7. Defensively, the Bears forced 20 Mustang turnovers, with sophomore defender Tom Adelsberger forcing two. Senior goalkeeper Tony Aquilino had six ground balls, to go along with eight saves in 53 minutes of play. Senior attack Jason Orlando also had four ground balls for the Bears. Ursinus will head to the west coast for two games in San Diego, starting with a matchup against Skidmore on Wednesday.

MADISON, N.J. – After jumping out to a 6-1 lead, the Ursinus College men’s lacrosse team saw Drew tie the score with four straight goals halfway through fourth quarter. However, two goals in the final 3:55 of the contest gave the Bears (1-1) an 8-6 win over the Rangers (0-1) Wednesday night. For the Bears, senior attack Jason Orlando had two goals and an assist, with junior attack Eric Farris scoring two goals, including what turned out to be the game-winner with 3:55 left in the fourth quarter. Ursinus got on the board first at 13:03 in the first as Orlando scored unassisted. After Drew scored two straight goals, Ursinus went on a 5-0 scoring run to take a 6-2 lead with 14:45 left in the third. Junior attack Dan Monzo scored with 7:08 left in the second, followed by a goal at 4:08 left from freshman midfielder Jeff Ocampo. Farris would score his first goal of the game at 2:55 off of an Orlando assist. With one minute remaining in the half, Ursinus got a goal from freshman attack Andrew Bean, off an assist from sophomore midfielder Pat Gillen. Gillen would score a goal of his own just 15 seconds into the third quarter, off an assist from junior attack Pat Nagle. Bears senior goalkeeper Tony Aquilino had 14 saves on 31 shots.

PHILADELPHIA – The Ursinus College men’s lacrosse team has partnered with L.E.A.P.S. program to instruct youth on lacrosse. The team will take part in upcoming clinisc as part of the LEAPS (Lacrosse, Education, Attitude, Perseverance and Success) program at the Simon Rec Center located in Philadelphia. The goal of LEAPS is to create new opportunities for students to gain scholarships to college via the sport of lacrosse. The event is also designed to expose student-athletes to lacrosse, work with the community center to identify new players, provide basic instruction to coaches and players, and incrementally develop the Philadelphia United Lacrosse League as a community-based lacrosse league that becomes part of the Southeastern Pennsylvania Youth Lacrosse Association. The format will include lacrosse instruction and a brief nutrition awareness activity. The L.E.A.P.S. staff will facilitate the lacrosse instruction with the help of the Ursinus team, while the nutrition aspect will be led by L.E.A.P.S.’ registered dietitians. COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Messiah sophomore midfielder J.J. Miller scored his third goal of the game with 28 seconds left in the fourth as the Falcons (1-0) eeked out an 8-7 win over Ursinus (0-1) Friday afternoon in the season opener for both teams. Miller’s goal was part of a three-goal quarter for Messiah, who trailed 6-5 heading into the final 15 minutes. Junior midfielder Nate Windon also had three goals in the win for the Falcons. For Ursinus, junior attack Eric Farris and sophomore midfielder Pat Gillen each had two goals for the Bears who fired off 52 shots in the loss. Ursinus found itself in a 3-0 hole after one quarter of play as senior attack Jeff Ziegler scored just 24 seconds in for a 1-0 lead. Windon then scored his first goal of the game on an assist from sophomore midfielder Pete Owens. Owens had two assists on the day. Miller netted his first goal with 11:35 left, on another assist from Owens. Ursinus then rallied off four straight goals. Gillen scored back-to-back goals starting with 13:31 left in the second quarter on an assist from junior midfielder Tom Walsh. Gillen’s second goal came at 9:53 when he scored on an assist from freshman midfielder Jeff Ocampo. Farris tied the score at 3-all with 8:35 left on an assist from freshman attack Andrew Bean. Following a 3-3 halftime tie, the Bears took a 4-3 lead just 41 seconds in as senior attack Jason Orlando scored on an assist from Ocampo. Messiah then scored two straight goals as Miller scored with 13:24 left on an assist from freshman attack James Baden, then Windon scored goal number two at 10:14 on an assist from Ziegler. Ursinus added two more goals before the end of the quarter, as junior attack Pat Nagle scored with 5:28 left unassisted, then junior long stick midfielder Derrin Mangin scored unassisted with 1:42 left in quarter three for a 6-5 lead. Windon’s goal with 7:21 left in the fourth tied the score again at 6-all, followed by a goal from Ziegler at 4:25 left in the quarter for a 7-6 Falcons lead. The Falcons scored four extra-man goals. Farris’ second goal, on an assist from Orlando, at 3:06 tied the score at 7-7. Despite the loss, the defensive unit forced 28 Falcon turnovers and had 42 ground balls. Mangin had six groundballs for Ursinus, with sophomore defender Tom Adeleberger along with Farris, Gillen and Ocampo adding in four. Miller had a game-high eight ground balls for Messiah. In goal, senior goalkeeper Tony Aquilino had 17 saves, with Falcon goalkeeper senior Greg Latimer having 20. Ursinus will travel to Drew on Wednesday.

BALTIMORE, Md. – Inside Lacrosse magazine has picked junior Eric Farris as a pre-season Centennial Conference pick, according to the latest edition.
Farris was the lone Ursinus selection on the team.
Last season, Farris ranked second on the team in points with 33 and was tied for the team lead in goals with 29.
Ursinus opens up the 2009 season at home on Friday, February 27 at 4 p.m. against Messiah.
