LANCASTER, Pa. – A total of 26 Ursinus College student athletes were named to the Centennial Conference Academic Honor Roll on Wednesday afternoon by the conference office.

To be nominated for the Centennial Conference Academic Honor Roll, a student must meet the following criteria: (a) participates in at least 50 percent of contests, matches or meets, or in the Conference varsity championship in swimming, indoor track & field or wrestling; (b) a sophomore or higher in class standing; (c) cumulative GPA of 3.40 or higher.

Three wrestlers compete at NCAA tournament

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Three Ursinus College wrestlers saw their run in the 2010 NCAA Division III Championships come to an end this weekend.

Sophomores Connor McCormick (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) and Connor McNamara (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) and junior Nate Murren (Littlestown, Pa./Littlestown) were all eliminated in the consolation round.

McCormick, wrestling at 149, opened up with a 10-6 loss to Issac Dukes of Mount Union, before falling to Mark Carey of Coe (Iowa) 7-3 in the wrestlebacks.

McNamara, wrestling at 197, dropped a 3-2 decision to Martino Sottile of SUNY-Cortland in the opening bout, before losing 11-2 to Zach Pizarro of Wilkes in the consolation.

For Murren, at 184, he lost his opening bout 13-8 to Mike Denver of The College of New Jersey, while dropping a 6-1 decision on Ben Adams of John Carroll.

Three UC wrestlers set for NCAA tournament

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Three Ursinus College wrestlers will begin their journey in the NCAA Division III tournament on Friday morning, and now know who they will be facing in their first matches starting at 11 a.m. local time.

Sophomore Connor McCormick (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts), junior Nate Murren (Littlestown, Pa./Littlestown) and sophomore Connor McNamara (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) will all wrestle in the tournament as they won their respective weight classes at the Centennial Conference Championships on February 20.

McCormick, wrestling at 149, will face the winner of fifth-seed Isaac Dukes of Case Western Reserve and Richie Clark of Mount Union in the second round. McCormick brings a 23-1 mark into the tournament.

Murren, going at 184, opens up with fifth-seed Mike Denver of The College of New Jersey in the first round. The winner of that bout, takes on fourth-seed Gabe Youel of North Central. Murren stands 26-3 entering the tournament.

Finally, McNamara starts his journey at 197 with a matchup against eighth-seed Martino Sottile of Cortland State. The winner of that bout, takes on the winner of the bout against top-seed Jared Massey of Augsburg and Zach Pizzaro of Wilkes. McNamara has a record of 32-3 heading into Friday.

The tournament, being held at the U.S. Cellular Center, concludes Saturday night at 7 with the finals.

HOBOKEN, N.J. – The Ursinus College wrestling team crowned three Centennial Conference champions on Saturday at the 2010 Centennial Conference Championships hosted by Stevens.

Sophomore Connor McCormick (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts), sophomore Connor McNamara (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) and junior Nate Murren (Littlestown, Pa./Littlestown) each won gold in their respective weight classes. The Bears finished second with 78 points and McNamara was named outstanding wrestler. Head coach Bill Racich was also named as Coach of the Year.

McCormick began his day in the149 bracket with a pin of Matt Parker of Muhlenberg in 2:36. He advanced into the finals with a pin of Ben Kaufman of Johns Hopkins in 2:50, then defeated Martin Bell of Merchant Marine via major decision 14-3.

Murren opened his day with a pin of James Williams at 184 in just 45 seconds. He moved into the finals with a 9-2 win over Luke Mitchell of Gettysburg, then defeated Pat Stanley of Johns Hopkins 6-3.

Finally, McNamara started his run to Centennial gold at 197 with a pin of Richard Knack of Washington and Lee in 2:48, then pinned Ernie Guaimano of Stevens in 6:11. He won his title match over Eric Vincent of Merchant Marine by a 4-2 decision.

Freshman Mike Kevlin (Manalapan, N.J./St. John Vianney) picked up a third place finish at 174, as he battled his way back in the consolation bracket. He started his day with a tech fall over Eric Veres of W&L, 17-0 in 4:29, before falling to Justin Diesel of Merchant Marine 8-2.

In the wrestlebacks, he defeated Scott Forester of McDaniel by pin in 2:24, before defeating Andrew Gianscolli of Johns Hopkins 4-2.

Sophomore Alex Blank (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) took third at 133, as he opened his day with a 4-3 loss to Paul Marcello of Johns Hopkins. In the wrestlebacks, he defeated Kyle Brisson of Stevens 9-0 to take third.

Senior Dan Glover (Bergenfield, N.J./Bergenfield) took third at 141, as he defeated Garrick Skuborn of Merchant Marine to start the day by pin in 6:28, before falling to Kevin Homan of Gettysburg by pin in 6:26. In the wrestlebacks, he defeated Sam Campbell of Washington & Lee 7-6, while defeating Skuborn again in the third place match 11-6.

Senior Harris Papas (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xavier) took fourth at 165, as he defeated Pat Doherty of Gettysburg to start the day by a 4-3 score. He was then defeated by top seed Vincent Renault in a tech fall, 20-4 in 7:00 to fall into the consolation bracket.

In the consolations, he defeated Tony Vordran 3-1, before losing to Eric Levenseller of Johns Hopkins 5-2.

Finally, junior Ed Minelli (Hull, Mass./Xavierian Brothers) was fourth at 285. He started his day with a 5-3 overtime win over Bobby Christopher of Gettysburg, then lost to top seed Brock Glotfelty by pin in 6:37.

In the consolations, he defeated Chris Galletta of Muhlenberg 9-5, before falling to James Roarty of Stevens 9-4.

Seeds set for 2010 CC Championships

HOBOKEN, N.J. – The brackets have been released for Saturday’s 2010 Centennial Conference Wrestling Championships at the Stevens Institute of Technology. Action gets started at 10 a.m.

Three Ursinus wrestlers grabbed top seeds in the tournament. The ten weight class winners will advance to the NCAA Championships two weekends from now.

Sophomore Connor McCormick (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) is the top seed at the 149 bracket, while junior Nate Murren (Littlestown, Pa./Littlestown) is the top seed at 184 pounds. Sophomore Connor McNamara (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) is the top man at 197 pounds.

McCormick opens up the day by wrestling Matt Parker from Muhlenberg, while Murren will take on James Williams from Washington & Lee. McNamara will take on Richard Knack from W&L to start the day.

Senior Dan Glover (Bergenfield, N.J./Bergenfield), who is the second seed at 141 pounds, will open up his day against Garrick Skuborn of Merchant Marine.

Sophomore Alex Blank (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) is seeded third at 133 pounds and will take on the winner of Ian Niely of Merchant Marine and Paul Marcello from Johns Hopkins.

Freshman Mike Kevlin (Manalapan, N.J./St. John Vianney) is seeded third at 174 pounds and will take on Eric Veres of Washington & Lee in the opening bout.

Senior Harris Papas (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xavier) is seeded fourth at 165 pounds and opens up against Pat Doherty of Gettysburg. Also seeded fourth is junior John Whitham (Abington, Pa./La Salle) at 157 pounds and he will wrestle Michael Testa of Hopkins to start the day.

Freshman Connor Gregory (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) is fifth at 125 pounds and will take on Adam Stevens of Johns Hopkins in the opening bout.

Junior Ed Minelli (Hull, Mass./Xavierian Brothers) will open up his day in the 285 bracket against Bobby Christopher of Gettysburg. Minelli is seeded fifth.

Bears pin McDaniel, 25-12, in final dual of season

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Ursinus College tuned up for the Centennial Conference tournament next weekend as the Bears (10-1, 5-1 Centennial) overcame an early deficit to defeat McDaniel (8-7, 5-2 Centennial) 25-12 Saturday afternoon in wrestling action

The Bears started in an early 6-0 hole after the first two bouts as freshman Connor Gregory (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) dropped his match at 125, 7-3 to Earl Eppard. At 133, sophomore Alex Blank (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) fell to Tommy Gorestsas, 6-1.

Ursinus got on the board at 141 as senior Dan Glover (Bergenfield, N.J/Bergenfield) got a 4-2 win over Mike Tancredi. At 149, sophomore Connor McCormick (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) defeated Brent Lowe, 6-0, to tie the dual at 6-all.

At 157, junior John Whitham (Abington, Pa./La Salle) had an injury default win over Matt Peters to gain a 12-6 advantage for the home team. Senior Harris Papas (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xavier) scored a 4-1 decision over Tony Vorndran to give Ursinus a 15-6 lead.

At 174, freshman Mike Kevlin (Manalapan, N.J./St. John Vianney) defeated Scott Forester 9-0 to earn four points for Ursinus, now up 19-6. Junior Nate Murren (Littlestown, Pa./Littlestown) defeated Will Yeo at 184 4-1, followed by a 9-2 decision win by sophomore Connor McNamara (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) had 197 over Joe Camlin.

At 285, Brock Glotfelty defeated junior Ed Minelli (Hull, Mass./Xavierian Brothers) by pin in 1:52.

Ursinus will be at the Centennial Championships next weekend at Stevens.

Saturday wrestling slate postponed

ALLENTOWN, Pa. – The Ursinus College wrestling team’s Saturday Centennial duals with Washington & Lee and McDaniel has been postponed due to the winter storm.

 

No make-up date has been scheduled.

Bears blank Mules, 48-0

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Ursinus won all ten matches as the Bears (9-1, 4-1 Centennial) blanked Muhlenberg (0-11, 0-5 Centennial) 48-0 Wednesday night in a CC wrestling dual match.

The night started with a forfeit win by the Bears at 125, picked up by freshman Connor Gregory (Winchester, Mass./Winchester).

At 133, sophomore Alex Blank (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) defeated Thomas Gazza, 10-4, followed by a senior Dan Glover (Bergenfield, N.J./Bergenfield) win at 141 over Kevin Homan, 6-2.

At 149, sophomore Connor McCormick (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) pinned Matthew Parker in 1:21, followed by a 17-2 technical fall win from junior John Whitham (Abington, Pa./La Salle) at 157.

The 165 bout saw senior Harris Papas (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xavier) defeat Ken Ludwig by pin in 6:39.

At 174, freshman Myles Tornetta (Frazer, Pa./Great Valley) won by forfeit, followed by a 17-5 major decision win for junior Nate Murren (Littlestown, Pa./Littlestown) at 184 over Nicholas Aloia.

At 197, sophomore Connor McNamara (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) defeated Nicholas Pallotta by pin in 2:42, with junior Ed Minelli’s (Hull, Mass./Xavierian Brothers) 4-0 win over Chris Galletta at 285 sealing the shutout.

Ursinus will battle McDaniel and Washington & Lee on Saturday.

Bears fall to Merchant Marine, beat Stevens

ALLENTOWN, Pa. – The Ursinus College wrestling team came away with a 1-1 mark in two tough Centennial Conference dual matches on Saturday at Muhlenberg College

Ursinus was handed its first defeat of the season as the Bears fell to 12th-ranked Merchant Marine 26-17, before escaping with a 21-20 win over Stevens to improve to 8-1 overall and 3-1 in the Centennial.

Against Merchant Marine, the Bears started off in a 4-0 hole as freshman Connor Gregory (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) lost to Jordan Alfaro 15-3.

Ursinus then took an 8-4 lead as sophomore Alex Blank (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) won his match at 133, 11-1 over Ian Nisely, then senior Dan Glover (Bergenfield, N.J./Bergenfield)  recorded a 13-1 decision over Garrick Skubon at 141 pounds.

At 149, freshman Curtis Watkins (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield-Warde) was pinned by Nick Swanson in 5:49, followed by junior John Whitham (Abington, Pa./La Salle) losing to Dan Twito at 157 6-1.

Merchant Marine would take the next two matches at Vincent Renaut won his bout at 165 over senior Harris Papas (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xavier) 16-4, then Justin Diesel had a 7-4 win over freshman Myles Tornetta (Frazer, Pa./Great Valley) at 174.

Ursinus started a rally at 184 as junior Nate Murren (Littlestown, Pa./Littlestown) decisioned Erik Schott 4-3 to cut the deficit to 20-11, followed by a pin from sophomore Connor McNamara (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) over Eric Vincent at 197 in 1:07.

With the score 20-17 in favor of USMMA, Judd Connell would pin junior Ed Minelli (Hull, Mass./Xavierian Brothers) in 1:08.

In the Stevens match, it came down to the last bout.

Gregory started with a pin of Brad Warren in 3:10 at 125 for a 6-0 lead. Blank then pinned Frank Maselli at 133 in 2:24 for a 12-0 lead.

At 141, Ryan Bridge recorded an 11-3 decision over Glover, while sophomore Connor McCormick (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) won his bout at 149 8-1 over Ryan Owens.

At 157, Charles Favia scored a 3-1 win over Whitham in a rideout. Bobby Bishop’s pin of freshman Michael Kevlin (Manalapan, N.J./St. John Vianney) at 174 in 1:09, gave the Ducks a 17-15 lead.

Ursinus would re-take the lead in the next two bouts, as Murren decisioned Ernie Guaimano, 7-1, followed by McNamara recording a 3-0 win over Justin Galati at 197 gave Ursinus a 21-17 lead.

Minelli would fall at heavyweight to James Roarty, but, helped to give Ursinus the win as he only lost by decision which gave Stevens only three points for the final score of 21-20.

Ursinus will host Muhlenberg on Wednesday.

Bears pick up wins over Johns Hopkins, Gettysburg

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Ursinus College wrestling team won its opening Centennial Conference duals on Saturday, defeating both Johns Hopkins and Gettysburg.

Ursinus (7-0, 2-0 Centennial) started with a 24-12 win over the Blue Jays, before hammering Gettysburg 37-9.

In the Hopkins bout, Ursinus quickly surrendered six points in the first two bouts via decisions. The Bears tied the score at 6-all at 141 as senior Dan Glover (Bergenfield, N.J./Bergenfield) pinned Matt Nelson in 2:27. Ursinus then won the next two bouts via decisions as freshman Curtis Watkins (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield-Warde) defeated Rocky Barilla at 149 4-0, then junior John Whitham (Abington, Pa./LA Salle) defeated Michael Testa 6-5 at 157.

After two more decision wins by Hopkins tied the score at 12-all, Ursinus picked up a win at 184 as freshman Michael Kevlin (Manalapan, N.J./St. John Vianney) won by forfeit.

Ursinus clinched the match at 197 as sophomore Connor McNamara (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) defeated Reid Mosquera, 4-2, then junior Ed Minelli (Hull, Mass./Xavierian Brothers) defeated Rick Danikowicz at 285 by a 4-2 score.

Against Gettysburg, Ursinus got its first win at 133 as sophomore Alex Blank (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) won by forfeit. At 141, Glover defeated Jack Bostrom by pin in 1:34. Watkins then followed up with a pin of Michael Slabinski at 149 in 6:38 for a  18-3 Ursinus lead.

Ursinus continued scoring as Whitham won at 157 over Joe Fiore, 3-0. Senior Harris Papas (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xavier) defeated Ben Patten at 165 via a pin in 4:10, followed by a 5-1 win from Kevlin at 174 over D.J. Neri.

Junior Nate Murren (Littlestown, Pa./Littlestown) defeated Luke Mitchell at 184 14-4, then McNamara defeated Marshall Puls in overtime 10-8.

 

Bears third at Homecoming Invitational

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College wrestling team finished third at the Homecoming Invitational on Saturday afternoon with a team score of 80.5 points.

Junior Nate Murren (Littlestown, Pa./Littlestown) and sophomore Connor McNamara (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) each captured their individual weight classes, while sophomore Alex Blank (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield), junior John Whitham (Abington, Pa./La Salle) and freshman Mike Kevlin (Manalapan, N.J./St. John Vianney) each finished in second place.

At 184, Murren defeated Chris Dean of Rhode Island College via a 9-1 major decision to start the day, while taking a 7-5 win over Sean Fitzgerald of West Chester to move into the finals. In the finals, he won 3-2 over David Casper of Wisconsin-Whitewater.

At 197, McNamara opened with a pin of James Lipford of Newport News Apprentice in 5:44, then blanked Brain Kramer of Oneonta 8-0. In the finals, he slid past Adam Latella of Wisconsin-Whitewater 1-0.

Blank started his journey in the 133 bracket with a 9-7 win over Andrew Cabibbo of Oneonta. After blanking Billy Lynn of Rhode Island College 9-0, he lost to Kyle Wacholder of Wisconsin-Whitewater 9-2.

At 157, Whitham opened with a 17-8 major decision over Garritt Meagher of Centenary, then downed Matt Perry of Apprentice 4-2. In the finals, he lost to Scott Legacy of RIC 3-1 in overtime.

Finally, Kevlin opened his day with a pin of Andrew Pettit of UW-Whitewater in 2:05, then defeated teammate freshman Myles Tornetta (Frazer, Pa./Great Valley) 10-2. In the finals, he was pinned by Joe Manley of RIC in 55 seconds.

Bears go 5-0 at North/South Duals

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Ursinus had a very successful afternoon at the North-South Duals as the host Bears won all five matches.

The Bears started the day with a 36-12 win over Morrisville State, while following that up with a 31-10 win over Coast Guard.

In their third match, Ursinus took a 24-16 decision over York (Pa.), followed by a 21-15 win over Central (Iowa).

In the final match of the day, Ursinus (5-0) defeated the United States Military Academy Prep School 37-9.

In the Morrisville match, the Bears dropped the opening match before winning the next three bouts. Sophomore Alex Blank (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) won a major decision at 133 by a 9-0 score, then senior Dan Glover (Bergenfield, N.J./Bergenfield) had a technical fall 22-4 at 141 pounds.

At 149, sophomore Connor McCormick (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) won his bout by fall in 3:00. After Morrisville took the bout at 157, Ursinus won the next four weight classes. Senior Harris Papas (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xavier) won his match at 165 via a fall at 5:27, followed by a 6-5 decision going to freshman Myles Tornetta (Frazer, Pa./Great Valley) at 174.

At 184, junior Nate Murren (Littlestown, Pa./Littlestown) picked up a pin in 5:30, followed by a pin from sophomore Connor McNamara (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) at 197.

In the Coast Guard match, Ursinus won the first four matches. Freshman Connor Gregory (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) won his match by forfeit, then Blank picked up a 6-2 decision at 133. Glover improved to 2-0 on the day with a 13-3 major decision, followed by an 11-3 major decision from McCormick hat 149.

Coast Guard took the next three bouts, until Murren won his bout at 184 via a 14-3 major decision. McNamara won his second match of the day at 197 via a major decision. Junior Ed Minelli (Hull, Mass./Xavierian Brothers) won his bout at 285 by forfeit.

In the York match, Blank moved to 3-0 on the day with a 7-5 decision at 133, followed by a 5-2 win by Glover at 141. McCormick went up to 3-0 on the day with a pin at 149 in 4:09. Junior John Whitham (Abington, Pa./La Salle) won his match at 157 via fall in 3:16.

Tornetta and McNamara each won by decision for Ursinus against the Spartans.

Against Central, Blank, Glover, McCormick and Whitham were all victorious. Blank got a pin at 4:21, followed by a 7-6 decision win from Glover. McCormick took a 7-5 decision at 149, followed by a 8-3 decision at 157 from Whitham.

Murren won his bout at 184 via an 8-2 decision to go 4-0, followed by a 6-0 win by McNamara at 197.

Finally, against the United States Military Academy Prep School, Gregory started the bout with a pin in 55 seconds. Blank then won by forfeit, followed by an 11-3 major decision win by Glover. At 165, Papas picked up a 7-3 decision win, then Tornetta won at 174 by pin. At 184, Murren won by forfeit, as did McNamara at 197.

Bears 7th at Citrus Invitational

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Ursinus finished seventh at the Citrus Invitational over Winter Break.

Two wrestlers took second as 133-pounder sophomore Alex Blank (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) and 197-pounder sophomore Connor McNamara (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) both accomplished that feat.

Senior Dan Glover (Bergenfield, N.J./Bergenfield), wrestling at 141 pounds, took third in his bracket while junior Ed Minelli (Hull, Mass./Xavierian Brothers) was fifth at 285 pounds.

Blank started his day with a 7-2 win over Matthew Ostovich, then scored a 16-0 tech fall over Timothy Vore of Buena Vista. After a forfeit advanced him to the final, Blank dropped an 11-2 major decision to Travis Drappi of Rhode Island College.

McNamara started his day with a 6-4 win over Alex Cressley of W&J, then defeated James Nemunaitis of John Carroll by a pin in 1:26. He lost to Bill Schindel of Mount Union in the title bout by a score of 7-1.

Glover started his day with a 6-3 win over Erik Johanson of Oneonta, then lost to Josh Malave of Mount Union 3-1. In the wrestlebacks, he defeated Johanson again, this time by pin in 4:07. Finally, he defeated Malkus by decision in the third place match 10-6.

Minelli opened up with a pin of Nathan Miller of W&J in 2:46, then lost to Brian Nicoll of Rhode Island College by pin in 3:30.

In the wrestlebacks, Minelli defeated Ty Sampsell of W&J 2-1, then scored a 20-7 major decision over Matt Clark.

After falling to James Lamonica of Oneonta State 4-1, he scored a forfeit over Nicoll, then defeated Nathan Miller of W&J by pin in 2:25.

Wrestling fifth at Petrofes

GRANTHAM, Pa. – The Ursinus wrestling team took fifth out of 13 teams on Friday-Saturday at the Messiah College Petrofes Invitational with a team score of 108.

Two wrestlers finished second in their respective brackets. Senior Dan Glover (Bergenfield, N.J./Bergenfield) finished as a runner up at 141, while junior Nate Murren (Littlestown, Pa./Littlestown) took second at 184.

Sophomore Connor McNamara (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) was third at 197, while senior Harris Papas (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xavier) took a fifth-place finish at 165.

Sophomore Ben Garelick (Wayland, Mass./Wayland) was sixth at 125, while sophomore Alex Blank (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) (133), freshman Mike Kevlin (Manalapan, N.J./St. John Vianney) (174) and junior Ed Minelli (Hull, Mass./Xavierian Brothers) (285) took eighth in their respective brackets.

Murren started his day with a pin of Gettysburg’s Jon Paul in 2:14, then took a 9-2 decision over Justin Galati of Stevens. Murren advanced to the semifinals with a 2-1 decision over Jeremy Burns of Springfield, before knocking off Hector Cintron of Johns Hopkins 3-1.

In the championship, he lost to top seed Josh Wake of Oneonta by a close 4-3 decision.

Glover opened up the day with a pin of Jared Brownmiller of Wilkes in 4:09, then knocked off bracket top seed Josh Malave of Mount Union 9-7. Moving into the semis, he pinned Mike Gregg of Oneonta in 6:34, then defeated Ty Kanouff of Messiah 7-6. In the championship, he fell to Kristopher Krawchuk, 4-3.

McNamara, after receiving a bye, defeated Dando Speers of Messiah by pin in 4:28. He then scored a 3-1 overtime win over Jake Weinrich of Wilkes, before falling to Bill Schindel of Mount Union by a 15-5 major decision.

In the wrestlebacks, he defeated Marshall Puls of Gettysburg by fall in 6:07, before pinning Pat Hogan of Messiah for third place.

Papas defeated Steven Bandtra of Messiah to start the day by a 7-2 decision, before falling to Ronald Thompson of Springfield 6-2.

In the wrestlebacks, he defeated Brad Burridge of Oneonta 8-1, then defated Darin Lyles of Mount Union 7-0. He then defeated John Piechuta of Mount Union 3-2, before falling to Thompson, again, by an 11-1 major decision. In the fifth-place match, he defeated Benjamin Marich of Wilkes.

Garelick scored an opening round pin of Abe Evans of Gettysburg, then defeated Brad Warren of Stevens by a tech fall. Moving into the semis, he defeated Jake Benedetto of Onenota by a 6-4 decision, before falling to Riki Reynolds of Mount Union by fall in 2:29.

In the wrestlebacks, he lost to Scott Mantua of Wilkes by a fall in 6:24, then lost to Benedetto by forfeit.

For Blank, he started with a 9-2 win over Tommy Gazza of Muhlenberg, then defeated Sean Ensign of McDaniel, 6-0. He fell to the wrestlebacks when he was pinned by Joseph Grippi of Springfield in 33 seconds.

In the wrestlebacks, he tech falled Andrew Vissichelli of Stevens 22-5 in six minutes, then fell to Ken Francis by a 12-7 decision.

In the seventh-place match, he lost by forfeit to Andrew Fisher of Wilkes.

Kevlin opened up his day with a 8-0 win over Marouaine Boutaib of Stevens, then lost to David Jones of Messiah via tech fall (15-0, 4:27).

In the wrestlebacks, he defeated Sean Swift of Bridgewater State, 9-0, then defeated Andrew Balina of Springfield by fall in 1:58. He then defeated DJ Neri of Gettysburg by a 4-1 decision, before falling to Zack Bates of Bridgewater via fall in 2:55.

In the seventh place match, he lost to David Okerblom of Messiah, 7-6.

Minelli started his day with a 4-1 win over KJ Young of Messiah, then dropped a 2-1 overtime decision to James Lomonica of Oneonta.

In the wrestlebacks, he defeated Ethan Covalt of Messiah 2-1, before falling to Zane Bachert of Messiah 3-2.

In the seventh-place match, he lost to Richard Wigglesworth of Springfield by forfeit.

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Three Ursinus College wrestlers appear in the latest rankings by d3wrestle.com.

Sophomore Connor McCormick (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts), junior Nate Murren (Littlestown, Pa./Littlestown) and sophomore Connor McNamara (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) all appear in the contender portion of the rankings, which highlight the top 26 in each weight class nationally.

McCormick, wrestling at 149 pounds, is undefeated following two tournaments with a record of 9-0. He has four pins, and has won the Messiah Invitational and the Ursinus College Fall Brawl.

Murren has a 4-1 record this season at 184 pounds, with his lone loss coming to Dallas Brown from Division I Maryland.

McNamara, who won his weight class at the Messiah Invitational at 197 pounds, stands at 5-1 overall. Like Murren, his lone loss came to Christian Boley of Division I Maryland.

Ursinus will be at the Petrofes Invitational this weekend, hosted by Messiah College.

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Ursinus opened up its home schedule on Saturday by hosting the non-scoring Fall Brawl.

Five wrestlers finished in the top four on the afternoon.

Sophomore Connor McCormick (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) won his bracket at 149 pounds. After opening up with a bye, he defeated Tim Goldkamp of Elizabethtown by a pin in 1:00. He then took a 7-2 decision over Chris Lombardi of The College of New Jersey.

To move into the finals, he defeated Shawn Mazzarone of Maryland, 3-1. In the finals, he took a 2-0 decision over Brent Lowe of McDaniel.

Junior Nate Murren (Littlestown, Pa./Littlestown) took second at 184 as he defeated Stuart Roes of Newport News by an 11-3 major decision. He then pinned Michael Gooding of Gettysburg in 1:00. He advanced to the finals by taking a narrow 4-3 decision over Bradley Nielson of Maryland.

In the finals, he lost to Dallas Brown of Maryland, 6-3.

Sophomore Ben Garelick (Wayland, Mass./Wayland) was second at 125 pounds as well. He defeated Ken Nakagwa by an 8-1 score to start the day, then pinned Ty Ford of Newport News in 2:24. To advance to the finals, he defeated Danny Hughes of The College of New Jersey by a 3-1 count.

He lost in the finals to Tyler Erdman in the finals via technical fall 16-0 at 3:00.

Junior Ed Minelli (Hull, Mass./Xavierian Brothers) finished in fourth place at 197, battling his way back through the consolation bracket.

After winning by forfeit, he fell to Ed Broderick of The College of New Jersey by fall in 3:59.

In his first match in the consolation bracket, he defeated Bobby Christopher by a 3-1 score in overtime, before falling to Carl Buchholz of Rutgers by a 9-2 score.

Finally, freshman Myles Tornetta (Frazer, Pa./Great Valley) finished fourth at 174 pounds. He lost to Owen Smith of Maryland, 4-1, before defeating Scott Forrester of McDaniel 9-3. In his next match in the consolation bracket, he defeated Mike Williams of Ursinus by a 4-3 score. He then defeated DJ Neri of Gettysburg, 9-6, before falling to Smith in the third place bout, 2-1.
Bears fifth at Messiah Invitational

GRANTHAM, Pa. – The Ursinus College wrestling team opened up its 2009 slate on Saturday by finishing fifth at the Messiah Invitational, hosted by Messiah College.

The Bears finished with a total team score of 52.5 points.

Sophomore Connor McCormick (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) opened up his season by winning the 149-pound bracket. Seeded fourth in the tournament, he defeated Dan Ippolitto of the Coast Guard Academy via pin in 1:13.

After getting a forfeit win over Ty Kanouff of Messiah, McCormick defeated top-seeded Jesse Byerly of Waynesburg in overtime via a fall at 7:25.

In the championship, he won via a 6-4 decision in overtime over second-seed Brent Lowe of McDaniel.

Sophomore Connor McNamara (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) won the 197-pound bracket, opening up with a pin over Reid Mosquera of Johns Hopkins in 4:41. He then defeated Tim Hopkins of Messiah 5-4 to advance to the championship round, before defeating Pat Hogan of Messiah via pin in 2:06.

Freshman Mike Kevlin (Manalapan, N.J./St. John Vianney) took third at 174 pounds, battling his way through the consolation bracket after falling via a 10-5 decision to Will Maegerle of UMBC in the opening round.

Kevlin defeated freshman Myles Tornetta (Frazer, Pa./Great Valley) in his first match in the consolation bracket 3-2.

He then scored a 12-3 major decision over Matt Leisy of Coast Guard, before pinning Josh Cook of Elizabethtown in 1:00.

He defeated Jared Roberts of Waynesburg in the third-place match 8-3.

Ursinus hosts its annual Fall Brawl on Saturday.

Springer named to Philly-SIDA All-Academic Team

PHILADELPHIA – Three Ursinus College athletes were named to the Philadelphia Inquirer/Philly-SIDA Winter All-Academic All-Area team on Sunday.

The team is voted upon by sports information directors within the Philadelphia area. Student-athletes must have a 3.0 GPA or higher, be at least a sophomore and be a significant contributor to the team.

Earning spots were sophomore Lloyd Tannenbaum (Men’s Swimming), Erin Slaunwhite (Women’s At-Large/Gymnastics) and Chris Springer (Men’s At-Large/Wrestling).

Tannenbaum (Dresher, PA/Upper Dublin) was a standout performer for the men’s swimming team during his sophomore season. During the Centennial Conference Championship meet, he helped set three school relay records. The top point-getter for the Beras, he was second in the 1650 freestyle with a time of 18:40.17 at CC championships, while finishing third in the 500 freestyle at championships.

Slaunwhite (Halifax, Nova Scotia/Halifax Grammar) enjoyed an outstanding sophomore season as well. A biology major, she earned an at-large bid to NCGAs with a 9.575 on the balance beam at the ECAC Championships hosted by Ursinus. She also had a team-high 9.550 on the vault during ECACs. During the regular season, she had a team-high 9.625 on the vault at the Pennsylvania Quad Meet, and scored a team-high 9.425 on the bars at the Towson Invitational.

Springer (New Egypt, NJ/New Egypt) finished his career by finishing second at the Centennial Conference Championships at the 157 pound bracket. An exercise and sports science major, he finished the season with a team-high 31 wins, with ten by major decision. During the Centennial Conference dual meet season, he had an 8-2 mark.

Bears second at Centennials; Kingsland wins Clifford Award

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Ursinus placed four wrestlers in the finals of the Centennial Conference championships on its way to a second-place finish at the season ending tournament Saturday afternoon at McDaniel College.

The Bears finished with 66 points, 50 points behind repeat champion Merchant Marine.

Four Ursinus wrestlers took second, with one taking third.

Senior wrestler Steve Kingsland shared the Chris Clifford Memorial Award with Andrew Goldstein of Gettysburg. The award is presented to a graduation senior who has earned the most points in his career at the Centennial Championships.

Freshman Alex Blank started the day as the second seed in the 125 pound bracket. He won his opening match over Frank Masselli of Stevens by fall in 3:13. He advanced to the finals with a technical fall over Ben Ersing of Washington & Lee in 5:18 with the score reaching 17-2.

He fell to top-seed Jordan Alfaro of Merchant Marine in a tight 5-3 decision.

Kingsland, who was the champion at 125 pounds last season, pinned Tim Hall of McDaniel in his opening match in 1:17 at the 133 pound bracket. He then earned a 7-4 decision over Mark Bistis of Stevens, before falling to defending champion Phillip Greene of Merchant Marine in a 7-3 decision.

At 141, senior James Bloom lost his opening match 3-1 to Pat Conrad of Stevens. In the wrestlebacks, he defeated Justin Welch of Washington & Lee, 5-3, then defeated Sean McGarry of McDaniel, 9-3. In the third place match, he lost to Kevin Homan of Muhlenberg via fall in 2:28.

Freshman Connor McCormick won his opening match at 149, with a pin of Kent Beers from Gettysburg in 2:32. He then lost to top-seed Rob Kein of Muhlenberg, 10-3, before defeating Keith Jaworski in the wrestlebacks, 6-2. He lost in the third place match to Brent Lowe of McDaniel, in a 10-0 major decision.

At 157, senior Chris Springer defeated Keith Swanson of Muhlenberg 9-1 in his opening match, then advanced to the finals with a 8-3 win over Leo Dormann of Stevens. Springer lost to Goldstein, the CC wrestler of the year, in the finals 11-6.

At 165, sophomore John Whitham lost his opening match to Joey Favia of Stevens 9-4. He then won his first match in wrestle backs by pin in 1:36 over Ken Ludwig of Muhlenberg. His day was ended by Eric Levenseller of Johns Hopkins, 8-3.

At 174, freshman Ben Finelli lost his opening match 4-3 to Justin Fitch of Muhlenberg, but, won his next match in the consolation bracket 7-6 over Mike Keane of Johns Hopkins. Finelli advanced to the third place match with a 6-3 win over DJ Neri of Gettysburg, before losing again to Fitch in the third-place match, 6-1.

At 184, sophomore Nate Murren advanced to the final with an opening pin of Jonathan Paul of Gettysburg in 2:58. He then defeated Hector Cintron, 5-4, before losing to Matt Horn of Muhlenberg in the finals, 12-8.

At 197, freshman Connor McNamara won his first match, 4-3, over Will Yeo of McDaniel, before being defeated by Eric Vincent of Merchant Marine via tech fall (16-1, 7:00).

McNamara won his third place match over Yeo, 6-4.

At 285, freshman Fernando Jones was pinned by top-seed Brock Glotfelty in his opening match in 2:29, then lost to Nick Pallotta of Muhlenberg by pin in 1:36.

Bears set for Centennial Conference championships

WESTMINSTER, Md. – The Ursinus College wrestling team makes a return trip to McDaniel College this weekend, as the Bears compete in the 2009 Centennial Conference championships. Action starts at 10 a.m. from the Gill Center.

Ursinus will be looking to recapture the title, after having their five-year streak snapped by Merchant Marine last season.

For the Bears, freshman Alex Blank or freshman Ben Garelick will take the mat in the 125 pound bracket. Blank enters this weekend with an overall record of 21-5, but only wrestled in three conference bouts. Garelick sports a 13-12 mark coming into the weekend.

At 133 pounds, senior Steve Kingsland will look to win another CC crown, this time at a new weight class. He captured the 125 pound title last season. With a record of 22-5, his only loss in the Centennial bouts was to Phil Greene of Merchant Marine. Greene, the defending champion, scored a 7-3 win over Kingsland on January 31.

Senior James Bloom brings an 18-12 mark and a 4-2 mark into the 141 pound bracket.

At 149, freshman Connor McCormick will come in with a record of 18-17 and 4-3 in Centennial Conference bouts.

Senior Chris Springer, who was a runner-up at 149 two years ago, is 6-1 in Centennial bouts this season and has a 29-10 mark at 157 pounds. His only loss was to Leo Dormann of Stevens.

At 165 pounds, sophomore John Whitham comes in with a mark of 7-14 and 1-6 in the Centennial.

At 174, freshman Ben Finelli stands at 13-14 and 3-1 in the Centennial.

Sophomore Nate Murren will try his luck at 184 pounds, a weight class that has been won by either Ursinus or Johns Hopkins in the last five years. Murren is 19-7 overall and 5-2 in the Centennial.

Another freshman, Connor McNamara, will enter the 197 pound bracket with a mark of 17-12 and 3-3 in the Centennial.

Two more freshmen, Fernando Jones and Anthony Greenstine, will compete in the heavyweight bracket.

Bears take two in final tune up for Centennials

WESTMINSTER, Md. – The Ursinus College wrestling team prepped for the Centennial Conference championships next weekend by finishing its dual meet schedule with two wins at McDaniel on Saturday afternoon.

In the opening match of the day, Ursinus defeated host McDaniel, 25-13, while routing Washington and Lee in the second match of the afternoon, 34-6.

Against the Green Terror, freshman Alex Blank opened up the day with an 8-2 win at 125 pounds, followed by 9-2 win from senior Steve Kingsland at 133 pounds.

Senior James Bloom defeated Sean McGarry at 141 pounds by an 11-6 score to up the lead for Ursinus.

At 157 pounds, senior Chris Springer scored a 13-4 major decision over Matt Peters.

Ursinus would capture three of the final four matches against McDaniel, starting with freshman Ben Finelli’s 3-0 blanking of Courtney Nightengale at 174 pounds. Sophomore Nate Murren then defeated Ryan Deiter at 184 pounds by a 6-4 score, followed by a fall from freshman Connor McNamara at 197 pounds as he pinned Joe Camlin in 2:59.

Against W&L, freshman Ben Garelick started the match with a pin over Ben Ersing in 3:46 at the 125 pound bout. Kingsland continued the winning with a 5-2 win over Samuel Campbell at 133, with Bloom registering a 9-0 win over Justin Welch at 141. Freshman Connor McCormick then won his bout at 149 pounds with a 6-1 win over Keith Jaworski.

At 157, Springer had a 7-3 win over David Dennis. Finelli won his second match of the day at 174, with a 9-3 win over Jonathan Brown. Murren finished 2-0 on the day with a pin of Richard Knack in 2:18, followed by a McNamara’s second win of the day at 197. This time, he pinned Zak Colangelo in 4:02.

Ursinus (10-4, 5-2 Centennial) will be back at McDaniel next Saturday for the Centennial Conference championships.
Bears pin Mules, 22-17

ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Ursinus won five out of the first six matches as the Bears (8-4, 3-2 Centennial) defeated Muhlenberg (2-6, 2-3 Centennial) 22-17 in a dual match Wednesday night.

The night started off with a forfeit win to freshman Ben Garelick at 125 pounds, with senior Steve Kingsland getting a 7-1 decision over Billy Hall at 133 pounds.

Senior James Bloom defeated Kevin Homan 5-1 at 141 pounds for a 12-0 lead.

Freshman Connor McCormick dropped his match at 149 pounds via a 16-5 major decision to Rob Kein. At 157 pounds, senior Chris Springer picked up a 8-3 decision for the Bears.

At 165 pounds, sophomore John Whitham had a 21-6 major decision over Kenneth Ludwig.

Muhlenberg grabbed the next two matches with Justin Fitch defeating junior Adam Papas, 15-2 at 174 pounds followed by a Matt Horn 4-3 decision over sophomore Nate Murren at 184 pounds.

Freshman Connor McNamara blanked Bill Sholly, 5-0 at the 197 pound bout for the final Ursinus points of the night. Sophomore Ed Minelli was pinned in 25 seconds in the heavyweight bout by Nick Pallotta.

Ursinus will go to York on Saturday.

Bears fall to Stevens, USMMA

KINGS POINT, N.Y. – The Ursinus College wrestling team dropped a pair of Centennial Conference matches on Saturday against the Merchant Marine Academy and Stevens.

In the first match of the day, Ursinus fell to 12th-ranked Merchant Marine 29-9. In the second of two matches, the Bears fell 25-15 to Stevens.

In the Merchant Marine match, USMMA took a 16-0 lead on two technical falls and two decisions. Ursinus got on the board at 157 pounds as senior Chris Springer defeated Scott Lowe, 3-1. AT 184 pounds, sophomore Nate Murran pinned Dan Argast in 1:46 for the other team points.

Against Stevens, freshman Alex Blank won his opening match at 125 pounds with a 15-4 major decision over Frank Maselli. Senior Steve Kingsland won his match at 133 pounds over Brad Warren via a technical fall, 15-0 in 5:17.

Ursinus got a win at 149 pounds as freshman Connor McCormick defeated Tony Mancini, 7-2 and then got three more points from 184 as Murran defeated Vincent Termini, 4-1.

Ursinus (7-4, 2-2 Centennial) heads to Muhlenberg on Wednesday.
Bears open up Centennial schedule with wins over Johns Hopkins and Gettysburg

ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Ursinus opened up the Centennial Conference dual meet season with two wins against Johns Hopkins and Gettysburg on Saturday afternoon at Muhlenberg College.

The Bears opened up with a 21-15 win over Johns Hopkins, then defeated Gettysburg 32-14 in the second match of the day.

In the Hopkins match, Ursinus took 6-0 lead in the first two bouts as freshman Alex Blank scored a 10-4 at 125 pounds over Adam Stevens, then senior Steve Kingsland defeated Michael Testa 8-2 at 133 pounds.

At 149 pounds, freshman Connor McCormick had a pin at 1:48 over Mike Vecchiollo, followed by a pin from senior Chris Springer at 157 pounds over William Selba at 4:29.

At 174 pounds, freshman Ben Finelli had a 7-2 win over Mickey Keane for the final points of the match.

Against Gettysburg, freshman Ben Garelick opened up the competition with a tech fall in 3:20 over Abe Evans at 125 pounds. Kingsland then had a 12-2 major decision at 133 pounds, followed by senior James Bloom’s tech fall at 3:00 over Matt Danielson at 141 pounds.

McCormick had his second win of the day at 149 pounds over Mike Carrozza by a 4-1 score.

Springer won his bout at 165 over DJ Neri, 6-2, followed by a pin from sophomore Nate Murren at 184 pounds in 5:59.

Freshman Connor McNamara won his match at 197 pounds by forfeit.

Ursinus (7-2, 2-0 Centennial) takes on Merchant Marine next week along with Stevens.

Havran fourth at Messiah Invitational

GRANTHAM, Pa. – The Ursinus College wrestling team took part in the Messiah Invitational on Saturday. No team score was kept.

Sophomore Wes Havran took fourth in the 174-pound bracket, the only place-winner for the Bears.

In his opening match, he defeated Rob Brooks of Drexel by a 7-2 score. He then lost to Davin Okerblom of Messiah by a 7-6 score, falling into the consolation bracket.

In the consolation bracket, Havran defeated Luke Mitchell of Gettysburg by a 16-4 major decision, but then lost to Tim Stewart of Messiah in the third-place match by an 8-3 score.

The Bears jump into Centennial dual meet action on Saturday at Muhlenberg, taking on the Mules along with Gettysburg and Johns Hopkins.

Bears hosts Fall Brawl

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Three Ursinus College wrestlers placed on Sunday afternoon at the annual Fall Brawl tournament hosted by Ursinus College.

No team score was kept.

Sophomore Nate Murren (Littlestown, PA/Littlestown) and freshman Ben Finelli (Ambler, PA/Germantown Academy) both finished in second place, while senior Steve Kingsland (Drexel Hill, PA/Haverford School) finished third.

Murren, wrestling in the 184 bracket, defeated Burang Joof from Thiel to start off the day by a 14-0 major decision. He followed that with a 8-3 win over Richard Knack of Washington & Lee, then defeated Stephen Massey of New York University by a 12-2 major decision. In the title bout, Murren came up on the short end of a 3-2 decision to Ryan Malo of Williams.

Finelli, at 174, defeated Austen Damico of Newport News Apprentice by a 10-2 major decision to start, then downed Josh Cook of Elizabethtown, 5-4. He advanced to the title match by a 12-3 major decision over Jon Brown of Washington & Lee. His unbeaten streak came to an end at the hands of Greg Osgoodby of The College of New Jersey in a 17-2 technical fall in three minutes.

Finally, Kingsland started the 133 bracket with a 6-2 win over Sean Campbell of Washington & Lee, then defeated Marty Harnish of Elizabethtown, 4-3. He dropped into the losers bracket after falling to Corey Brown of Thiel, 5-3.

In the losers bracket, he defeated Campbell again by a 3-0 score, then bounced Harnish in the third place bout 2-0.

Ursinus will be off till the Petrofes Invitational on December 5.

Bears start season at Messiah Invitational

GRANTHAM, Pa. – The Ursinus College wrestling team got their 2008 season start on Saturday at the Messiah College Invitational.

The Bears finished with 48.5 points. Messiah won the invitational with 84 points, followed by Elizabethtown in second with 80.

Sophomore Nate Murren (Littlestown, PA/Littlestown) picked up a first place finish at 184 pounds as he went 3-0. He opened the day with a pin of Nate Deisem of Messiah in 1:26, followed by a 5-2 decision over Hector Cintron of Johns Hopkins. He defeated Elizabethtown’s Bill Meaney by fall in 2:21 to win the first-place bout.

Senior Chris Springer (New Egypt, NJ/New Egypt) finished second at 157 pounds. He beat Alex Evanoff from Waynesburg 7-4 to start his day and followed that up with a 4-2 decision over Matt Cross from Messiah. He then beat Ron Marvel from University of Maryland-Baltimore County 7-4, before falling to Issac Dukes from Case Western Reserve, 4-3

The only other place finisher was senior James Bloom (Schnecksville, PA/Parkland) at 141 pounds. He beat Dean Baker from Waynesburg via major decision, 15-5, then beat Kyle Weaver from Case Western Reserve 6-3. He suffered a loss to Eric Rhodes from Elizabethtown, 8-4. In the third-place bout, Weaver beat him by a 4-2 count.

Ursinus will host the annual Fall Brawl on Sunday.
