Neurobiologist - Tenure TrackUrsinus College invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor for Fall 2010. Responsibilities include teaching introductory and upper level courses in neurobiology and the campus wide first year common intellectual experience course, and developing a research program that involves undergraduates. Preference given to applicants whose research includes the intersection of behavior with structure and function. Ph.D. and post-doctoral research required; teaching experience desirable.
Ursinus College, located in a suburban setting 25 miles northwest of center city Philadelphia, is a highly selective, nationally ranked, independent, coeducational, residential liberal arts college of 1,650 students, with a long tradition of strength in science. As part of its commitment to liberal education, all entering students participate in a seminar course called the Common Intellectual Experience, with readings from philosophy, science, history, and literature. As the aim of this course is to foster an intellectual community on campus, the successful candidate will contribute to the teaching of this course.
The Biology Department, which supports majors in Biology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Neurobiology, and Environmental Studies, is, with twelve full-time faculty members, the largest in the College. Faculty interests span all disciplines of biology, from biochemistry to ecology, as part of its philosophy of offering students a broad-based and integrative curriculum.
The Neuroscience Program is an interdisciplinary program supported by the Biology, Psychology, Physics, and Philosophy Departments. The neuroscience major is increasingly popular among students declaring majors and the introductory neuroscience course is an increasingly popular choice to fulfill the college laboratory science core requirement. All neuroscience majors are required to participate in a research experience.
Aided by numerous grants from NSF, NIH, and HHMI, the Department and the College provides strong support for faculty research involving undergraduates. An example is the College-wide Summer Fellows Program, which provides stipends, supply money, and housing for approx. 80 students engaged in summer research projects, some funded by the College, others by NSF and NIH grants to individual faculty. Faculty mentors of Summer Fellows also receive stipends.
Applicants should describe (1) their commitment to and philosophy of undergraduate teaching in a liberal arts setting, and (2) a research program that will involve undergraduate collaborators.
