Best Buddies is an organization dedicated to enhancing the lives of people with intellectual disabilities by providing opportunities for one-to-one friendships. Best Buddies is an international organization with more than 1,400 college, high school, and middle school campuses involved worldwide. There are six programs available- Best Buddies Citizens, e-Buddies, Jobs, Middle Schools, High Schools, and Colleges.
Here at Ursinus College our chapter has 16 people with a disability each paired with a college student. There are also about 5 other college students that are active associate members who participate in the group activities but are not paired up. To be a part of the program college students must have weekly contact (by phone, email, or mail) and meet twice a month with their buddy. Every month the chapter has a group event to give pairs the opportunity to see their buddy one of the two times that month. This past year we had a pizza party, Halloween party, went bowling, went to the IMAX, went to Dave and Buster’s, went to the annual Best Buddies Ball, and went to a Phillies game. By creating these friendships the organization not only hopes to give those with intellectual disabilities the friendship and treatment they deserve and sometimes lack, but also hopes to have an impact on the college student’s life as well.
