Our waste diversion programs aim to lower the amount of waste that goes to the landfill by diverting recyclables and compostables out of the landfill stream and into new uses. We focus in three main areas through the Office of Sustainability. In addition to our efforts, Facilities Services has a campus-wide recycling program that recycles consumer waste (like cans, bottles, and paper) as well as less common waste (like florescent bulbs and recyclable batteries). We have also collaborated with Residence Life to include blue recycling bins in all the first year residence rooms. See below for more information on these programs.
||We are working with Facilities and Environmental Studies to determine what the waste stream in Lower Wismer is and how we can expand it to include composting. We hope to have new bins in Lower Wismer soon...
|Campus Awareness & Participation
||We work on raising awareness about recycling through many avenues, including signage and events. Our giant water bottle is a great example of how we encourage the campus community to recycle while also educating community members about how much waste is created at events as well as alternatives.
RecycleMania is a friendly competition and benchmarking tool for college and university recycling programs to promote waste reduction activities to their campus communities. Over an 8-week period each spring, colleges across the United States and Canada report the amount of recycling and trash collected each week and are in turn ranked in various categories based on who recycles the most on a per capita basis, as well as which schools have the best recycling rate as a percentage of total waste and which schools generate the least amount of combined trash and recycling. With each week’s updated ranking, participating schools follow their performance against other colleges and use the results to rally their campus to reduce and recycle more.
National recognition is provided to the winning school in each category on the RecycleMania website and in a national press release. Winning schools receive an award made out of recyclable materials, and win the right to host that category’s special traveling trophy for the coming year.
