The Housing Preference Questionnaire (HPQ)

The HPQ is a way for you to communicate with us about your housing preferences. The link to the HPQ will go live on Friday, May 30. During Spring Orientation on Thursday, May 29 and Friday, May 30 there will be presentations from the Residence Life Office that will tell you everything you will need to know about living on campus and how to fill out the HPQ. An email will be sent to all students via UC email on Friday, May 30th with detailed instructions on how to access the HPQ. A link to the video presentation will also be available for those who cannot attend orientation.

About First-Year Housing

The Residence Life Program at Ursinus College strives to provide you with a positive and educational living environment that will serve as your home away from home. First year students live together within various residence halls on campus. This allows you to live in close proximity to other students who are experiencing the same issues and challenges of college life for the first time, just like you. Resident Advisors are selected carefully to work with first-year students. Additionally, the Assistant Director for First-Year Centers devotes particular attention to the community development efforts and programs provided for first-year students.

 

First-year students are primarily placed in double, triple and quad room options. There are  very few singles available, so you should plan on having at least one roommate. All first year buildings are substance-free, and alcohol is strictly prohibited.

What is in my room?

Student rooms are equipped for comfortable residence hall living. The College provides a bed, mattress, desk, chair, and a bureau, wardrobe or closet for each student. Window shades are provided for each room. Some rooms have carpeting, some have tile. The First Year Centers do not have central air conditioning. Students may bring window units.

 

What Should I Bring?

You will need to provide your own blankets, comforter or bedspread, linens, pillow, towels, etc. All mattresses are 80 inches long. Therefore, we recommend that you purchase standard non-fitted sheets or extra long twin sheets, as well as an extra-long mattress cover.

Since rooms have only a ceiling light fixture, you will find a study lamp extremely useful. Octopus-style lamps (multi-headed lamps) and halogen lamps are not permitted. We ask that you limit your use of electrical appliances to those listed below. Refrigerators must be no larger than 4.3 cubic feet. Portable window air-conditioners are permitted. You might want to wait until you receive your room assignment before making a purchase because, if the windows are of a certain size, it will be indicated in an email. The unit should be no larger than 5500 BTU and should be Energy Star rated.

Personal furnishings may be added to the room within the limits of good judgment, safety and policies as specified in the Student Handbook. We also recommend that you wait until you have moved in before you purchase accessories like bookshelves, bulletin boards, curtains and scatter rugs because you may like what's already there and your roommate may want to have some input on these matters.

Wash: bath towels, washcloths, shower tote/caddy, soap holder, toothbrush holder, first-aid kit, hair dryer, curling iron, straightening iron, razors, bathrobe, flip flops

Organize: storage boxes, storage cubes, drawer organizer, over the door organizer, hangers, hooks, laundry basket/hamper, drying rack, iron/ironing board, flashlight, batteries

Study: desk accessories, waste basket, desk lamp, surge protector, extension cord

Extras: door mirror, waste basket, posters, wall art, picture frames, throw pillows, area rug, mp3 player, DVD player, television, light bulbs, fan, air conditioner (5000-5500 BTUs/Energy Star appliances)

This room is now your home for the next 9 months, personalize it with your roommate(s) and make it someplace you want to be!

 

what Should i not bring?

Primarily for reasons of fire safety, but also due to energy conservation and the limited electrical capacity in each hall, the following items are not permitted: wireless routers, electric heaters, large refrigerators, electric grills (including George Forman Grills), toaster ovens or other electrical cooking equipment (small microwaves are allowed), octopus-style lamps (multi-headed lamps) and halogen lamps.

If you would like to hang pictures or posters in your room, please use small pins or tacks.  Blue mounting putty leaves stains on the walls and could result in room damage charges at the end of the year.

In addition, the following items are prohibited: candles, pets, BB guns/paintball guns, weapons, fireworks, propane tanks, drugs or alcohol, and anything else prohibited by law.

 

Frequently Asked Questions about Housing

What is already in my room when I get here? When you arrive there will be a desk, chair, dresser, bed frame, and mattress for each resident. There are also closets in all of the rooms, although the triple and quad sized rooms have wardrobes or closets large enough to share.

How do I get assigned to my room and building? Once you have filled out the on-line housing preference form, we do our utmost to match you with the selections you have made. We cannot give everyone their first selection for all of their choices, but we try our best to accommodate everyone’s preferences.

When will I get my room assignment? Room assignments will be emailed to you at your Ursinus email account on July 1st. The Residence Life Office uses your responses on the Housing Preference Questionnaire to determine your housing assignment. As soon as everyone in your class is placed in an assignment, we send the housing emails to you. We know that you want this information as soon as possible, and we do everything we can to complete this process in a timely fashion. Please be patient as we work through the summer months to ensure the best housing process is in place.

After I get my room assignment, may I come and see my room? Ursinus is home to many groups during the summer months. Additionally, our Facilities Staff uses this time to prepare the residence halls for the upcoming academic year. Therefore we are unable to offer tours or individual visits for your room during this time.

Can I call the Residence Life Office to get the dimensions of my room? Because of the individuality of the various residence halls on our campus, this information is not available. We encourage you to wait until you arrive before purchasing curtains, area rugs, or other large items for the room. There are many local shopping options for you in the Collegeville area.

How do I get placed with my roommate(s)? There are a number of ways that you could be placed with your roommate or roommates. The first way is by selecting your roommate(s) on the Housing Preference Questionnaire. The request must be mutual (so if Bob asks for Pete, Pete must also ask for Bob in order for the match to happen). One of the ways to meet people in your class before you need to choose a roommate is through this Blackboard site. There are several discussion groups that you can join that allow you to meet people and discuss living options for next year. If you do not have a roommate in mind, the Residence Life staff will use the information you submitted on the Housing Preference Questionnaire to determine a compatible roommate(s) and community.

How can I get in touch with my roommate(s) once I know who they are? When you receive your housing assignment email on or before July 1st, you will also get your roommate(s) name and email address. You can contact them via email and exchange telephone numbers.

When can I move in? First-Year Student Move In is on Thursday, August 21, 2014. All first-year students will go to Helfferich Gymnasium for registration, where you will get your keys for your mailbox and residence hall.

What if my roommate(s) and I experience problems? We anticipate that every set of roommates will face some adjustment issues. You may be coming from very different backgrounds and situations, but one of the amazing things about college is meeting new people and experiencing life in a different way. There are many resources to go to for help – your Resident Advisor, your Assistant Director, and the Wellness Center just to name a few. Our goal is to help students learn to live together through conversation and mediation. Additionally, room changes are not permitted during the first or last 2 weeks of any semester.
