"Conducting independent research projects as an undergraduate was pivotal in my transition from a teacher-centric mode of education to one in which I learned to depend on self motivation and regulation.  These projects also gave me a notion of academic freedom in which hard work and creativity combined to produce, rather than simply re-produce, knowledge.  I can think of no better way of having prepared myself for my current graduate study."
