Christian Rice

Director of Bonner Program & UCARE
Wismer Lower Level

Christian Rice graduated from Ursinus in 1998. He was a Politics and German double major. Upon graduation, he attended Harvard Divinity School, receiving a Master of Divinity in 2001 and a Doctorate of Theology in 2008. Dr. Rice returned to Ursinus in 2008 when he was hired to direct the College’s civic engagement initiatives. He has overseen the expansion of the Ursinus Bonner Program and was instrumental in the creation of UCARE—the Ursinus Center for Advocacy, Responsibility, and Engagement. He has recently been appointed Assistant Dean for Civic Engagement. Dr. Rice also teaches in the Philosophy and Religious Studies department, teaching courses on world religions, religious ethics, and religion’s relationship to human rights.

Christian met his wife, Janel Reppert Rice, at Ursinus and they married in 2001. Janel is a pastor of Central Moravian Church in Bethlehem, PA. On March 14th, they welcomed their first child into the world—Sophie Ruth Rice.

Dr. Rice says: “I would like others to know that UC students are amazingly creative, morally responsible, and thoughtful young people. What impresses me most is how reflective UC students are about their place in the world and how they intend to contribute to the betterment of our society. I have noticed that UC students exhibit sophistication when it comes to thinking about the big questions of life. Their Ursinus education might not give them all the answers--I doubt this is possible-- but I think it does expose them to the right questions.”
