"Ursinus," says Nobel Laureate and graduate Gerald Edelman, "has all the excellent qualities of a small college with high academic standards." One of every ten Ursinus graduates is a physician. Their success, as well as Dr. Edelman's Nobel Prize in Medicine, confirms our belief that the best way to prepare to enter a health profession — whether students intend to become an allopathic or osteopathic physician, a veterinarian, a dentist, an optometrist, or a member of the allied health professions — is through a liberal arts curriculum with outstanding strength in the sciences. At Ursinus, students work directly with professors in biology, biochemistry, chemistry, molecular biology, neuroscience, and physics to develop the analytic and laboratory skills top schools require.

Philadelphia is known worldwide for the number and quality of its schools, its hospitals, and its bio-technology and pharmaceutical industries. Ursinus is only 25 miles from Philadelphia, close to hospitals, health care facilities, biotech firms, and major pharmaceutical companies. All science majors are able to gain hands-on experience by completing internships and volunteer service at medical centers, hospitals, dental and veterinary clinics, private practices, and science-related businesses.

Ursinus students benefit from the experience of a health professions adviser, a health professions advising committee, as well as individual advisers in the sciences and humanities. Advisers help students plan the strongest possible program for medical school admission. The Ursinus environment values independence and responsibility. For all these reasons, Ursinus remains one of the best places in the country to begin an apprenticeship in the art of healing.
