St. Mary’s Franciscan Shelter for Homeless Families

Located in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, St. Mary’s Franciscan Shelter is an emergency shelter assisting homeless families in South Eastern Pennsylvania to get back on their feet.

In 1987, two Sisters of St. Francis wanted to address the growing problem of homelessness particularly the homelessness of families.  Since its beginning, the shelter has housed more than 600 families and provided more than 112,500 nights of shelter and 336,000 plus meals.

A typical family may stay as long as eight weeks in a room assigned to them.  They share a common laundry and bathing facilities and help with cleaning and chores around the shelter.

We are always looking for dedicated volunteers who can help us in the following areas:

  • Monitor the kids’ playroom
  • Prepare, set-up, and eat dinner with the residents
  • Provide one-on-one computer literacy training for residents (e.g. e-mail basics, Microsoft Word, using the internet to search for jobs, etc.)

Volunteer times:

Dinner: 4:30-7:00 p.m. Monday-Friday
Playroom: 7:00-8:00 p.m. Monday-Friday
Computer Literacy training: 7:00-8:00 p.m. Monday-Friday
