A special reception for the artist was held at the Museum on Nov. 6. 

The artist dedicates the exhibition to the memory of her longtime friend, John (Jack) F. Rodenbaugh, Ursinus Class of 1955, the late husband of Patricia Rodenbaugh.

Deena Gu works in watercolor on silk, using time-honored techniques and incorporating images and conventions from the deepest roots of Chinese painting. A native of Shanghai, China, Gu received the rigorous training of classical Chinese artists, and later relocated to Philadelphia to continue her studies at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Her exhibition at the Berman Museum will feature several painted scrolls, some more than 30 feet long, that depict narrative scenes and delicate landscapes in a style that has endured for centuries. There is a delicate intensity to the intricate brushwork in Gu’s long horizontal scrolls, which take months to complete.

Gu ’s work is in public and private collections including United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, Curtis Institute of Music, the National Liberty Museum in Philadelphia, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Woodmere Art Museum. She is on the Board of Alumni at Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and is a member of Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts Committee for the school. Gu’s work is also the subject of an upcoming exhibition at the Woodmere Art Museum in Chestnut Hill in Philadelphia.

The Philip and Muriel Berman Museum of Art at Ursinus College is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, and from noon to 4 p.m. on weekends. The museum is closed on Mondays. It will also be closed for holidays from November 27–December 1, 2014, and from December 24, 2014 through January 5, 2015. Admission is free. It is accessible to visitors with disabilities.
