Open Access Week, October 24-30, 2016

Myrin Library display features Open Access “In Action” at Ursinus

The theme of this year’s International Open Access Week is “Open Access in Action.”  Sponsored annually by the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition (SPARC), the event brings awareness to the benefits of removing barriers to research and scholarship for readers, authors and institutions.

The display, located in the Library’s main entrance, highlights examples of open access in action at Ursinus College.  In less than two years, open content in Digital Commons @ Ursinus, our institutional repository, has been downloaded nearly 30,000 times in 150 countries around the world.  In addition to faculty and student works, the repository now makes available over 500 items from the Ursinusiana archives as well as special collections like the entire run of Pennsylvania Folklife Magazine.  This Fall, students in the class “Bears Make History: Digital Entrepreneurship in the Archive & Online” learned about the benefits of open access to archival collections, while Health and Exercise Physiology students published their research in an open access journal

For more information about the open access movement, or to learn how to contribute your work to the repository, please contact Andy Prock, Scholarly Communications & Metadata Librarian.
