Ursinus to Host Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth

“CTY is thrilled to bring our challenging programs for bright students to Ursinus College this summer,” said Elaine Tuttle Hansen, executive director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth. “The school’s state-of-the-art science facilities and proximity to a major metropolitan area make it a great fit for our global community of families.”

Recognized as a global leader in gifted education, CTY is dedicated to identifying and developing the talents of academically advanced pre-college students around the world. The center serves bright learners and their families through research, advocacy and counseling, as well as through its signature gifted summer, online, international and family programs. A nonprofit, CTY awards $5.8 million in financial aid to income-eligible students annually.

Ursinus will host fifth-and-sixth-grade students over two, three-week sessions from June 24 to July 13 and July 15 to Aug. 3. The sessions include challenging courses in the humanities, writing, math and science. Approximately 240 students and 60 staff are expected to attend each session.

“Ursinus is very excited to serve as a residential site for the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth this summer, and to host the many talented students enrolled in the program,” Ursinus College President Brock Blomberg said. “CTY has long been a leader in fostering the talents of academically gifted students and we are honored that Ursinus has been identified as a place for CTY to advance its mission.”

The opportunity to host a prestigious program like CTY is an outgrowth of Ursinus’s Summerburst program, launched last year to engage with a larger community that extends well beyond campus borders through academic, athletic and partner programs on campus.

CTY was founded in 1979 in response to a national need to recognize and develop the world’s brightest young minds. Today, it is accredited for students in grades K-12 by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. There are more than 155,600 CTY alumni around the world, including the founders of Facebook and Google, Regeneron Science Talent Search winners, Rhodes Scholars and MacArthur Fellows. 

CTY’s 25 residential and day sites in the U.S. and Hong Kong serve thousands of students each year from all 50 states and dozens of countries around the world. Dickinson College, Franklin & Marshall College, Haverford College and Lafayette College are the other Pennsylvania colleges serving as residential sites for CTY this summer. –By Ed Moorhouse
