New Medicare ID Cards for Retirees

Social Security Numbers will be removed from Medicare cards.  New cards will be mailed between April 2018 - April 2019

Beginning on April 1, 2018, the Center for Medicare Services (CMS) will begin a fraud and identity theft prevention initiative that removes the Social Security Number based Health Insurance Claim Number (HICN) from Medicare cards.  CMS will begin mailing new Medicare cards to retirees April 2018 with completion expected by April 2019.

The new card will contain a new number, also called the Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI), that is unique to each person and will only be used for Medicare coverage.

The new Medicare card and number will not change coverage or benefits for people with Medicare.

Aetna’s retiree ID cards will not be impacted by this change.

Retirees will not have to do anything.

Retirees can contact Emeriti Service Center directly at 1-866-363-7484 and select option #2 with any questions.
