Dr. Fong Remembered at Service

Friends, family, colleagues, and members of the Ursinus College community gathered to celebrate the life and legacy of President Bobby Fong Sept. 20.

With the backdrop of organ music played by John French, William F. Heefner Chair of Music, the service in Bomberger Auditorium began with Rev. Charles Rice, College Chaplain, and words by Lucien T. Winegar, Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs. Speakers included Carol Schneider, President, Association of American Colleges and Universities, who was the speaker for President Fong’s first Ursinus commencement in 2012.

Representatives of the community including Anthony Sierzega 2015 for the students; Missy Bryant, assistant dean of students, for the staff; Dallett Hemphill, Professor of History, for the faculty; Dr. Kenyon Chan, Interim chancellor, Univesity of Washington Tacoma, for higher education colleagues; Jill Leauber Marsteller 1978, senior vice president for advancement, for alumni; and Alan Novak 1971, Chair, Board of Trustees, for the Trustees.

Colin Fong spoke of his father, saying “the underlying foundation of his character was …tolerance and compassion.” Cast members of The Picture of Dorian Gray, directed by Professor of Theater Domenick Scudera, highlighted the work of Oscar Wilde, honoring President Fong as a scholar of Oscar Wilde and as editor of a volume of Wilde’s poetry. Rebecca Everhart, coordinator of Intervarsity Ministry, gave the benedction.
