From Myrin Library’s Collections: Open Access Journal Subscriptions and E-Book Acquisitions

According to the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition (SPARC), Open Access is “the free, immediate, online availability of research articles coupled with the rights to use these articles fully in the digital environment.”

The burgeoning Open Access Movement, which started at the end of the twentieth century during the serials crisis, has recently been impacting journal subscriptions at Myrin Library. Here are a few examples of recent open access initiatives in which Myrin Library is currently participating:

Read and Publish Open Access Initiative with the Company of Biologists

During the calendar years 2021 and 2022, for the same cost as our current subscription to the journal, Development, Ursinus College Faculty can publish unlimited fee-free open access articles in Development and other journals published by the Company of Biologists. This agreement also allows Ursinus community users access to the journals, Journal of Experimental Biology and Journal of Cell Science with access to these journals going back to 1853.

Subscribe to Open Program with Annual Reviews

By continuing to subscribe to the Annual Reviews Journals, as Myrin Library has been doing for several years, the Subscribe to Open Program has enabled eight additional Annual Review Journals that haven’t been part of Myrin Library’s original subscription package to be converted to open access with all articles published under a CC BY license. The journals that are in the current 2021 Subscribe to Open Program include: Annual Review of Biomedical EngineeringAnnual Review of Cancer Biology , Annual Review of Environment and Resources, Annual Review of Genomics and Human Genetics, Annual Review of Nuclear and Particle Science Annual Review of Political Science,Annual Review of Public Health , and Annual Review of Virology

Other subscribed journals that have recently converted to open access include: Journal of Athletic Training, Journal of Biological Chemistry and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) Myrin Library is still subscribing to PNAS, as the journal articles in this particular journal become open access after a six-month embargo period.

In addition to the journals mentioned above, Myrin Library has been a founding member of Lever Press since 2016. Lever Press is an open access monograph imprint of the University of Michigan Press which has published fourteen open access titles to date.
