Ursinus continues to support bird migration through Lights out Philly

Since March of 2021, Ursinus College has participated in the Lights out Philly program. The Lights out Philly program is part of a national effort to encourage businesses and other organizations to turn off non-essential light during bird migration season. This effort is a partnership between the College’s Facilities Department, Biology and Environmental Studies Departments and Office of Sustainability. During migration, lights can confuse the birds, especially on cloudy nights when they cannot see the stars that they use to help find their way. The Facilities Department worked to identify certain outdoor lights on and around buildings, particularly with lights pointing upward - as well as some interior lights - that could be safely turned off during spring migration from April 1 to May 31 and during fall migration from August 15 to November 15 during midnight to 6 a.m.
