UC Possibilities hosts digital accessibility event
In the midst of “crunch time” before finals, the leadership of UC Possibilities, the Ursinus student group focused on increasing awareness of hidden disabilities, prepared and hosted an event focused on digital accessibility, an important and rising element of inclusivity for individuals with disabilities.
The students, lead by president Sophie Louis, a previous Inclusion and Equity award winner, created an event centered around digital accessibility. With snacks from teh Happy Mixer (a great spot for those with allergies or dietary restrictions), students, faculty, and staff gathered in IDC 116 for presentations and conversation.
First up was Christine Iannicelli, associate director of research, teaching, and learning services and co-coordinator of the digital studies minor. Christine spoke about the principles of universal design (perceivable, operable, and understandable) and how they relate to digital accessibility. Christine provided great step-by-step instructions for canvas changes and Microsoft accessibility tips.
In reflection, Christine said, “It was a privilege to present to a group of students interested and invested in digital accessibility! I’m a huge proponent of universal design and the more people on campus that know and follow its principles, the more accessible and inclusive our campus will be.”
Joanna Timmerman, interim director of disability and access, then shared information provided by Erin Hovey, director of web strategy and content, about web accessibility guidelines and Ursinus’ efforts to not only stay compliant but lead in accessible website practices.
Finally, Joanna shared information about accommodations and resources for students with disabilities who need accessible texts or assistive technology. Students in attendance then brainstormed ways to make this information more accessible to all students and holding all those on campus accountable for the accessibility of our resources.
Overall, the event was a great success. Attendees shared their appreciation for the knowledge and came away with tips and tricks for increasing the inclusivity of our campus community! A huge thank you to UC Possibilities and all those who spoke at or attended the event!
