The Word Becomes You: Documentary Theater
Learn more about the art of documentary theater:
Q & A with Domenick Scudera
Explore the possibilities of documentary theater and create your own. This workshop will provide an overview of the history, theories and practices of documentary theater and inspire participants to create their own short documentary theater pieces. It will include a discussion, small group work and a theater creation exercise using Anna Deavere Smith’s Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992. Participants will not only understand the work of this meaningful theater practice intellectually, they will also “become” the words through performance. The workshop is a modified version of a unit from Scudera’s Community-Based Theater and Civic Engagement course developed with a grant from Project Pericles. A version of the workshop is also used as the final, group project in his Intro to Theater course. He has directed a production of Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992.
