Liberal Education at Ursinus

Liberal education is provided through an academic program that empowers the intellect, awakens moral sensitivity, and challenges students to improve society. Students gain intellectual curiosity, the capacity to think analytically, critically, and creatively, and the skill to express thoughts with logic, clarity, and grace. Further, they develop a deepened sense of human history and an understanding of who they are as persons, what they ought to do as citizens, and how they best can appreciate the diversity and ambiguity of contemporary experience.

Our Values

Ursinus’s Community Values support a diverse college community of students, faculty, staff, alumni, trustees, and other stakeholders that holds itself accountable to the following:

  • Foster excellence through high expectations and meaningful achievement
  • Honor open inquiry and free expression
  • Act ethically, responsibly, and sustainably
  • Be welcoming, equitable, and inclusive

We are committed to using these values to guide our actions and to identify ways to improve.

The above statement is the culmination of the work of the Values Team. Nearly a year of comprehensive discussions, and dozens of revisions have led to this formulation, which were approved by the Board of Trustees in May of 2019.

The Values Team arose from repeated open invitations to any faculty and staff member to volunteer to join the group; it was not an appointed group.
