Join Us for the 19th Annual UC Fringe Festival September 12-15, 2018

The Ursinus Fringe Festival is a diverse, vibrant, exciting 4-day event that brings cutting-edge, experimental performances and visual arts to campus.  Modeled after the Philadelphia Fringe Festival, the Ursinus Fringe brings together professional companies and student and faculty artists to share their latest theater, dance, music, film and visual art works.

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 12

 

Classical Indian Dance Workshop

Blackbox Studio Theater

3:00-4:15pm 

At this performance and lecture/demonstration, you will have the opportunity to hear about some of the traditions of Classical Indian Dance, see a performance by a professional artist, and even try some of the movement yourself.

(Also offered on Thursday at 1:30 pm)

Fringe Cabaret

Blackbox Studio Theater

7:00pm

Artists from the Ursinus campus community perform works of dance, song, poetry, comedy, you-name-it! Unpredictable and entertaining, the Cabaret showcases the performing skills of Ursinus artists in this fun, entertaining and varied show

Queer Film Festival Screening: Mädchen in Uniform (1931)

Mädchen in Uniform, a product of Weimar Germany, is considered a lesbian cult classic.  Manuela (played by Hertha Thiele) is a spirited teenager attending a strict boarding school for girls where she falls in love with her teacher, Fräulein von Bernburg (played by Dorothea Wieck).  The film was banned in Germany and nearly banned in the U.S. for its queer content.

Afro-Cuban Dance Workshop

Troupe Da Da African Dance and Drum Ensemble was Founded by Mrs. Renee ‘Oyin’ Hardy in Philadelphia Pennsylvania in 2002. Troupe Da Da ‘s repertoire includes a variety of traditional West African and Afro-Cuban dances.  Dressed in colorful, authentic costumes and singing in traditional African languages, the dancers of Troupe Da-Da move gracefully to the powerful rhythms of the Djembe & Dundun, drums from Guinea West Africa, and the Conga & Bata drums of Cuba. Troupe Da-Da also plays a number of African percussion instruments such as the Log Drums from Ginuea, West Africa , the Talking drum from Nigeria, and the Sekere (hand drum) also played in West Africa and Cuba.

The mission of Troupe Da-Da is to represent traditional West African and Cuban culture at the highest level of artistic excellence throughout the preservation and presentation of Traditional dancing as well as masquerade, music and storytelling. We seek to expand the cultural awareness of African contributions to the arts through educational programs and performances that highlight the social and ritualistic customs of the people of the African Diaspora.

Drag Show

Professional drag queens from Philadelphia and New Hope will perform.  Join hosts Thunder Showers and Summer Clearance as they welcome the gorgeous and talented Astala Vista, plus 2 amazing Philadelphia Drag Wars winners, Anita Manhattan and VinChelle!

 

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 15

Aerial Dance Fabric Workshops

with Nicole Predki of Frequent Flyers Productions, Inc.

12:30-2:30pm and 3:00-5:00pm

Spin, swing and fly!  Come explore a playground of aerial fabric.  We’ll cover basic skills that will enable you to start exploring the vertical floor created by aerial fabric in a fun and empowering environment.  This workshop is designed for anyone interested in exploring new ways to move through space.  While you’ll leave feeling like a performer from Cirque du Soleil, no special skills are required to participate.  Everyone is welcome and encouraged to play.

Nicole is a dancer, scientist, interdisciplinary artist and momma.  She has performed aerial and ground-based dance around the country and has been known to accidentally break more than a few test tubes while dancing in science laboratories. She currently teaches at Frequent Flyers Production, Inc., and is on faculty Metropolitan State University of Denver where she co-coordinates a Dance Program in collaboration with Cleo Parker Robinson Dance.
