Curriculum
The Theater and Dance Department strives to honor diverse voices in its curriculum and regularly offers courses such as African American Female Playwrights, The History of Jazz Dance, Modern Queer Drama, African Dance, Women Playwrights, Hip Hop, the History of Drag, and World Theater and Drama, among others. Overall, we are working to decolonize our curriculum so that it represents content and pedagogical practices that reflect the world in which students live. In so doing, our curricular offerings are particularly suited to address the questions of the Ursinus Quest curriculum, as our courses challenge students to investigate their own experience against the backdrop of an evolving social climate, with issues of diversity and inequity at the forefront.
Season Selection
As an additional part of our curriculum, we aim to develop production seasons that include historical and contemporary work by artists of color, LGBTQ+ artists, and women artists, among other under-represented people. We are committed to representing as many diverse voices as we can, both onstage and behind the scenes, when we choose the plays and create the dance concerts for each season.
Casting
We practice inclusive casting in an effort to reimagine plays and dance pieces from different perspectives.
A Collaborative Team
The Theater and Dance department seeks to host a variety of diverse guest artists (choreographers, directors, musicians, and designers) so that our hiring practices embody our commitment to inclusivity. The Theater and Dance Department champions the voices and aspirations of all of our students and all of our collaborators.
