Recruiting

All recruiting of prospective student-athletes must be done within the rules and regulations of the NCAA and Ursinus College Enrollment Division.

ADMISSIONS

Any questions regarding admissions should be directed to your sport’s Assistant Director of Admission - Athletic Liaison. Sport Reports will be distributed to all head coaches on a weekly basis.  Coaches should keep up to date with athletic rankings of their prospects thus allowing the sports reports to be updated and accurate.

NCAA COMPLIANCE

  • For all questions regarding compliance and/or student eligibility, ask the Deputy AD or Associate AD.
  • All coaches should review the NCAA Guidelines Recruiting document.
  • All coaches are responsible for knowing NCAA recruiting guidelines.  Head coaches are responsible for the recruiting activities of all assistant coaches on staff.
  • All Head Coaches and Assistant Coaches with recruiting responsibilities will take a yearly exam issued by the NCAA that covers the regulations of NCAA Division III.
    • The Associate AD will send the link to the test via email.  Click on the link and then click on “Start the Test.”  You are expected and encouraged to use the NCAA manual during the test.  (Ask any administrator to borrow one.)
  • If you have ANY questions about whether a specific recruiting activity is permitted please ask before acting to avoid any potential violations.

OVERNIGHT RECRUITING VISITS

  • Overnight visits may be offered to senior prospective student-athletes.  Coaches should notify Jill Fazzini in advance of all visits.
  • Overnight visitors must complete the online visitors form at least five days in advance in order for them to stay. Before arrival, visitors must also complete the guest registration form

Prospective student athletes must read and submit the Overnight Visit Policy form prior to coming to campus for their visit.  Prospective student athletes are not permitted to consume alcohol during their visit and should be reminded of such. The student host takes full responsibility for the welfare of the prospect during the visit, and therefore must follow the itinerary provided by the coaching staff, remain with the prospect during all social events and will not provide the prospect with alcohol.

REIMBURSEMENT

Coaches may be reimbursed for recruiting expenses (i.e. mileage, travel, lodging) through the athletic recruiting budget.  Each sport has a budgeted allotment for recruiting.

FINANCIAL AID

As a Division III institution, Ursinus College adheres to the rules established by the NCAA relevant to financial aid.  All athletics staff members are responsible for awareness and understanding of NCAA Division III bylaw 15 - Financial Aid - which states that “A member institution shall not award financial aid to any student on the basis of athletics leadership, ability, participation or performance.”  Specifically, institutional athletics staff shall not influence a student-athlete’s financial aid package (as assembled by the financial aid officer or financial aid committee) directly or indirectly.

Athletics staff members are not to discuss financial aid with recruits and their families; they should advise families to contact Student Financial Services directly.  Athletic recruits and their families must follow all policies and procedures that are applicable to all prospective students.

TRANSFER STUDENTS

An Ursinus coach may not speak with a student-athlete who is currently enrolled at another institution about transferring.
If a coach is contacted by a possible transfer, immediately direct him/her to the Associate Athletic Director and then cease all contact until the student-athlete has been cleared.
The Associate Athletic Director will contact the student-athlete or his/her current school to complete a Permission to Contact form.
If the coach does not follow the procedures, the student-athlete may be not be eligible to participate in Ursinus College Athletics for at least one year following his/her transfer to Ursinus.

Ursinus student-athletes who express interest in transferring out of Ursinus to another institution should be directed to the Associate AD to complete the appropriate forms.
