Details

The Berman Museum is pleased to announce the first of its Berman Conversations series in conjunction with Real Estate: Dwelling In Contemporary Art. Please join us October 18th at 6PM for a conversation between artists Max Becher and Andrea Robbins and Jon Volkmer of Ursinus College about their work, the meaning of travel, and architectural archetypes.

Max Becher and Andrea Robbins work with film, video, and photography to explore what they call “the transportation of place.” Through documentation of spaces that closely resemble others from across a large geographical or cultural divide, Robbins and Becher probe authenticity, cultural identity, and the legacies of capitalism, slavery, immigration, tourism, and mass-communication. Subjects have included “New York” and “Venice” in Las Vegas, “Little Wall Street” in Cuba, and Habitat for Humanity’s “Living in Poverty Area” (on view in Real Estate), which aims to expose visitors in Americus, Georgia to impoverished living conditions from around the world.

Jon Volkmer is Professor of English at Ursinus College, Director of the Creative Writing Program, and advisor to the student literary publication, The Lantern. His research interests include experimental and historical fiction, travel writing, travel literature scholarship, and poetry. He is the author of a collection of poems about grain elevators, a meta-fictional travel memoir, and a biography of Roberto Clemente. His stories, essays, and poems have appeared in countless literary magazines.

All Berman events and exhibitions are free and open to the public.
