Professor of English Patricia Schroeder ’74 will take her love of blues-influenced literature overseas to Rome as a Fulbright Scholar.

There, Schroeder will teach the interdisciplinary course, “Race Matters in American Literature, Music and Culture,” to Ph.D. students.

She was also a Fulbright in Catania Sicily in 2010, “I am very excited,” she wrote, explaining that her time in Sicily was “richly rewarding for me.  I hope Rome will be even better!”  She enjoys taking Italian classes in her spare time.

The Fulbright international exchange program is designed to increase mutual understanding between the people of the U.S. and other countries, and offers only 500 teaching and research awards to individuals chosen for academic merit and leadership capabilities.

Schroeder, a 1974 magna cum laude Ursinus graduate, earned her master’s degree and Ph.D. from the University of Virginia. She teaches courses in American literature, African American literature and modern drama, as well as specialized courses in blues and literature, literature of mixed-race Americans, and emancipation narratives. Her research interest has been in cultural studies, specifically the influence of blues music on American literature and legendary bluesman Robert Johnson as a cultural icon. Her 2004 book, Robert Johnson, Mythmaking, and Contemporary American Culture, was published by the University of Illinois Press. – W.G.
