The annual effort supports the college’s educational mission and coincides with Giving Tuesday, a global day of philanthropy.
With an emphasis on participation rather than dollar amount, the one-day challenge is aimed at raising funds and increasing giving participation and engagement among Ursinus’s community of alumni, faculty, staff, students, parents and friends.
This year, #Giving2UCday donors raised $212,087.31. Throughout the day, groups such as faculty and staff; parents; Graduates of the Last Decade (GOLD); Greek alumni; and the 1869 Society (individuals or groups who make unrestricted annual gifts of $1,869 or more) were asked to meet specific goals. To help motivate and inspire the record-breaking participation, several alumni served as matching challenge donors for each goal.
This marks the fourth annual #Giving2UCday event and each gift supports Ursinus’s Annual Fund, although donors can choose to give to another area. Giving provides vital resources for students and makes an impact on Ursinus College’s reputation and grant eligibility. Ninety-eight percent of Ursinus students receive scholarships and financial aid, and much of this comes from the college’s unrestricted annual giving program.
This year, current students were encouraged to support the Bear2Bear Student Emergency Fund on #Giving2UCday, which assists students facing temporary financial hardship as a result of an emergency or crisis situation.
More than 900 donors gave more than $136,000 on #Giving2UCday in 2016.
Last fall, Ursinus launched its $100 million comprehensive campaign to raise funds in support of its mission and strategic priorities that will advance academic innovation, enrich the student experience and provide enhanced access through scholarships. The campaign will culminate with another historic milestone: the college’s sesquicentennial anniversary during academic year 2019-20.
Colleen Fida ’15, assistant director of annual giving, says, “It wasn’t long ago that I was directly impacted by the funds that I’m working to raise now. Without the generosity of donors, I would not have been able to go to Ursinus. I am forever grateful for everything Ursinus has done for me and #Giving2UCday is the perfect opportunity to say ‘thank you’ with a gift to the college.”
