What Homecoming Means to a Former Student-Athlete

Homecoming is a celebration: it’s a time for current students, alumni and anyone in the UC family to celebrate the Bears! While at Ursinus, I was a member of the field hockey team. For Homecoming Weekend, all fall sports schedule a Conference game. We would spend Saturday morning as a team, eating a pancake breakfast, and getting fired up to get a W at home! As our game was in progress, football would start their game. When our game ended (with a W!), we would have our team, alumni and family tailgate. I can remember some years that we had players nominated for Homecoming Court, who would run over to walk out during halftime of the football game still in their field hockey uniform! The fall was always my favorite time of year at Ursinus because of field hockey and I especially loved how the campus was buzzing, not only around Snell Field, but all over campus during Homecoming Weekend!

Recently I heard Ursinus will be combining Homecoming and Family Weekend; September 21-23, 2018. This was news to me, because every Homecoming included family for me and as it was for many other student-athletes. A weekend game day was typically a chance to see my family and we planned tailgates to spend time with family and teammates.

Homecoming for a GOLD or any alumni member is a chance to spend time with friends that we don’t see often anymore. If you’re headed to campus for Homecoming and Family Weekend, be sure to catch these games:

Women’s Rugby v Kutztown at 10 a.m.

Field Hockey v Gettysburg at 12 p.m.

Football v Moravian at 1 p.m.

Women’s Soccer v Gettysburg at 5 p.m.
