Student Publishes Technical Analysis Article

Senior Frank Sirch’s independent study paper on Bollinger Bands was published in the Undergraduate Business and Economics Research Journal.

Frank Sirch, a double major in Biochem and Business and Economics has a strong interest in picking stocks.  In pursuit of one of his passion, Frank decided to examine the reliability of a technical trading rule in predicting stock returns.  One of the most common rules used in the portfolio of technical rules is the Bollinger Band.  Since Bollinger Bands are based on past returns over a specified period, Frank examine different period lengths, and different widths of the bands to determine which combination would yield the greatest predictability of future returns.  Amazingly, Frank found that the buy signal was able to yield on average a 1.7% return, while the sell signal was able to yield a 1.2% return.

Frank’s faculty adviser suggested that he should submit his research to an undergraduate journal.   The editors found it valuable and interesting and accepted it for publication.  The Undergraduate Business and Economics Research Journal is a publication of the Campbell School of Business at Berry College.  Each article was blind reviewed by two students from Berry College.  Frank’s article was published in volume 5 of the journal where the acceptance rate was less than 25%.
