Sophia King ’20 recognized for volunteer service and honors research

Sophia King, a Politics and Spanish double major and class salutatorian, was recognized as a model volunteer by ACLAMO Family Center in Norristown, which also highlighted her honors research on health care access for children in immigrant and Spanish-speaking families.

In its May 2020 newsletter, the non-profit organization ACLAMO - Accion Comunal Latinoamericana de Montgomery County (Latin American Community Action of Montgomery County) thanked graduating seniors from area high schools, colleges and universities for their volunteer service. ACLAMO selected Sophia to represent the entire group of graduating volunteers and noted that she has been volunteering in ACLAMO’s after-school program for all of her four years at Ursinus. ACLAMO added that her “experience served to affirm Sophia’s already strong commitment to marginalized populations, children and the Spanish language.” The story also noted Sophia’s senior honors research, entitled “Health Care Access for Children in Latinx Immigrant Families in the Greater Philadelphia Region.” Sophia served as an outstanding representative of Ursinus and UCARE’s Scholar in Service program as well as the Politics Department and Melrose Fellows program.
