Complete Archive of the Grizzly Newspaper Available Online
Myrin Library welcomes all new and returning students! To start the semester, we’d like to let you know about a great online resource for learning about the recent history of Ursinus College.
All print issues of the Ursinus College Grizzly newspaper (September 29, 1978 to March 5, 2020) are now available in Digital Commons. Approximately 42 years of newspapers (935 issues!) have been digitized and posted for viewing and online searching. Headlines, authors and subject keywords have been added to aid discovery in the hopes that this database of Ursinus history will be useful to student researchers and faculty as well as alumni. The entire database can be searched and limited by date range. Each issue can be downloaded as a searchable PDF document.
The student newspaper contains valuable information including reporting on:
- Student government, activities, events and performances
- Sports, clubs, Greek life and other campus organizations
- Faculty, staff and student profiles
- Ursinus history, traditions and customs
- Administrative policies, initiatives and fund raising efforts
- Campus planning, building construction and renovations
- Crime and campus safety
- Photographs, advertisements and cartoons
- Opinion pieces, satire, reviews and letters to the editor
- Local and world news
The newspapers have already been utilized in several courses (Bears Make History, Race and the University, Introduction to African American and Africana Studies) and provide first-hand accounts of events transpiring on campus and in the local community. They are particularly useful for studying the history of higher education, town-gown relations, and many other topics including environmental studies, technology, race relations, gender and sexuality and social and cultural trends.
The predecessor to the Grizzly, the Ursinus Weekly newspaper, ran from 1902 to 1978 and will also be made available online in its entirety. Issues from 1950 through 1978 are currently available.
We hope everyone enjoys exploring these resources and we encourage you to check out the other online Ursinusiana collections!
