Ursinus Alum Speaks with Innovation in Biology Students about COVID-19 Tests
Hestia Mellert is a lead developer of a test for SARS-CoV2.
Students enrolled in Innovation in Biology have been delving into the science of the current pandemic. To help them understand how a regulated test for SARS-CoV2, the virus that causes COVID-19, is developed, Dr. Rebecca Roberts (Biology) invited a former student back to campus. Dr. Hestia Mellert, one of Dr. Roberts’ first research students, is now a Senior Director at Biodesix, Inc., a diagnostics company in Denver, CO. Dr. Mellert developed a test for SARS-CoV2 and discussed the process with the Ursinus students. The seminar was funded by a grant from the Athena Institute for Women’s Wellness.
