Department Recognizes Spanish Volunteers

The Modern Language Department invites Spanish students to a dinner to thank them for their volunteering work

On November 21, the Modern Language Department held an informal dinner in the Bear’s Den to thank the Spanish students who volunteered this semester serving the Hispanic community in Pottstown, Pa.

Twelve students attended the event, along with Prof. Giovanna Steyaert, coordinator of the volunteer program. Ms. Rita Páez, executive director of CCLU (Centro Cultural Latinos Unidos), and Ms.Maricruz Clemens, Assistant Case Manager of the ACLAMO center in Pottstown, were also present.

Prof. Steyaert commended the work of our students, who shared the most rewarding aspects of their experience tutoring and teaching Latino children and their families.

Dr. De Arana, chair of the Modern Language Department, noted that this was the first sustained volunteering initiative taken by Spanish students in the last 18 years.

Ms. Páez and Ms. Clemens thanked the students for making such a big difference in the lives of so many Latino families and hoped that Ursinus students would be able to continue volunteering in the spring semester.

If you are interested in volunteering in or learning more about this program, please contact Giovanna Steyaert.
