Professor Useche Publishes Article

A New Tool to Understand Industrialization and Cultural Production in Late 19th-Century Spain

In this new publication, titled, “Coordenadas materiales de la industrialziación  en el mapa simbólico de la Restauración española” [Material Coordinates of Industrialization in the Symbolic Map of Spanish Restoration], Professor Useche proposes a new analytical tool to understand the impact that industrialization processes had on the diagnosis and prescription of national problems as these were approached in political speeches, literary texts, and journalistic pieces during the late nineteenth century in Spain. By studying three representative authors of the period, the article shows how concepts, images, and even physical objects related to industry remapped the whole project of modernization and presented its proponents with new avenues to pursue it.
