Overview:
I am spending my summer interning at Milagro House in downtown Lancaster. Milagro House is a program that provides education, housing, and counseling for women and their children experiencing homelessness. As an intern I performed room checks, provided rides and childcare, sat in on workshops and counseling sessions for the women as well as input demographic information from all previous residents into one database.
What was Valuable About the Experience:
The experience was so valuable to me because I have always been unsure of what I wanted to do in the future and this internship allowed me to find what I really enjoy and what I want to pursue.
The Coolest Part of the Experience:
The coolest part of the experience was being with the women first hand. The offices are located right in the women’s house therefore I was able to spend time directly interacting with the women and children. In addition, I got to sit in on interviews with potential residents. This was interesting because I got to hear their stories and it opened up my eyes to the extremely unfortunate situations some people go through. Also, going through all the demographic information of past residents I got to learn about their history, what brought them to Milagro House and how successful they are after leaving Milagro. Milagro has a very high success rate of creating stability in the women’s lives and it was cool to see this first hand.
Who I Met that Made a Difference:
Patty, Ellie, and Ellen are all women I worked with who help to run Milagro House. These women taught me so much about the field of social work and were so open to any questions I had. They got me involved in every aspect of what Milagro provides to the women. The women going through the Milagro program made a difference and had a large impact on me as well because I got to interact with them and hear their stories and help them along through the process of getting back on their feet.
