The Passionate Playwright

Angela Bey ’19

Being the recipient of Ursinus’s first theater scholarship empowered Angela Bey to hit the ground running. The result? Roles in three productions and a workshop of her own play—The Playground—all in her first year.

She was cast as the lead in Eurydiace as a first-year student before acting in the student-run Breakaway’s Good Kids and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. “I needed something funny and light-hearted. That cast is near and dear to my heart.”

It’s her work on The Playground that now has her excited. She had been developing The Playground with Philadelphia Young Playwrights for a couple of years. “I messaged a few people: ‘Hey, you want to read a play?’ The reading ran over five hours, people were talking about it, asking for a full production. I was overwhelmed because I just wanted feedback for my writing. The theater faculty suggested a workshop, we put together a really great cast and we put this on.”

That hard work is paying off for the spirited Bey: The Playground hits the stage this fall.
