Overview

The Controller is responsible for all accounting operations of the College. The Controller reports directly to the Associate Vice President for Financial Operations (AVPFO) and works closely with the AVPFO in formulating and administering policy and procedures pertaining to all fiscal matters of the College.

Areas of oversight include: accounting; cash services; fixed assets; plant funds; restricted gifts and endowments, and similar funds; tax compliance; and development and maintenance of sound internal control systems over financial operations. The Controller makes recommendations for improving College-wide financial management, directs financial audits, ensures compliance with state and federal regulations, and provides strong leadership and management skills while effectively supervising staff and building an effective team.

Direct reports: Sr. Accountant, Accountant, Payroll Coordinator, Purchasing Coordinator and Accounts Payable Coordinator.

Responsibilities

  • The preparation of all financial statements and tax returns, to include quarterly financial statements, the annual audit, A-133, NCAA, 990, 990T, etc.
  • Develops policies, procedures, systems and internal controls necessary to support the College’s fiscal operations and to safeguard the College’s assets;
  • Responsible for the central accounting functions of the College, the assignment of new accounts, and all reconciliations.
  • Maintains budgetary control over the College’s various operating and capital budgets including general operating, auxiliary enterprises, restricted, and sponsored programs;
  • Maintains accounting control over the College’s assets including current funds, student loans funds, endowment funds and plant funds; account reconciliations, bank reconciliations and accounting for travel advances;
  • Pays the College’s financial obligations including payroll, accounts payable, construction invoices and debt service;
  • Provides access to vice presidents, deans, directors, chairpersons, department heads, and others responsible for managing departmental budgets and accounts to financial information in the College’s general ledger through the reports provided in the online reporting tool.
  • Reviews transaction for compliance with College policies and procedures as well as state and federal regulations.
  • Maintains accounting control over the University’s movable equipment inventory, including capitalization (tagging) and control (physical inventories), performed in conjunction with College departments.
  • Provides assistance in the budget process and manages the budget of the Business Office.
  • Work closely with the Associate Vice President for Financial Operations and third parties regarding treasury functions of the college (cash, investments, endowment, debt)
  • Provides information to rating agencies and bond holders and prepares surveys as needed (e.g. IPEDS, NACUBO endowment survey, etc.).
  • Attends the following Board of Trustees committee meetings (and presents and assists as needed): Finance and Facilities, Investment Committee, and Audit Committee.
  • Administers faculty, departmental, foundation, and state grants.
  • Coordinates with the Development Office regarding accounting for all gifts, to include stock, real property, annuities, and pledges receivable.
  • Supervises, coaches and mentors staff, and incorporates College priorities, initiatives and strategic changes into the goals and objectives of individual staff members.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Requires a BS in Accounting with a CPA and/or graduate degree (from an AACSB-accredited business school) preferred or BS in Accounting.
  • At least 7 years of progressively responsible accounting experience, preferably within higher education, with at least 2 of those in a supervisory capacity.
  • Knowledge of and experience with PC hardware and Microsoft Office software—particularly Excel and Word.
  • Strong knowledge of internal controls necessary, as incumbent will oversee financial processes and controls and ensure the integrity of financial transactions within the College.
  • Personal attributes including detail orientation, excellent communication, listening and problem-solving skills, service orientation, ability to relate well to Board members, faculty, administration and staff and the ability to work independently.
  • Ability to explain financial information to non-financial individuals clearly and meaningfully.
