“Stay safe.” That’s how Deborah Feairheller signs off on her emails, and it’s a mantra that the volunteer firefighter takes, well, to heart. She is director of our Hypertension and Endothelial function with Aerobic and Resistance Training (HEART) Laboratory, where she mentors students
as they perform cardiovascular research on volunteer firefighters, athletes and adults. This year, Deborah was invited to teach Montgomery County’s fire chiefs, hazmat personnel, EMS administrators and fire academy experts about blood pressure, heart health, exercise and what she’s learned from her research. Her next big step is submitting a grant proposal to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for an upcoming HEART Lab study on firefighters.
