Many students arrive on a college campus seeking answers to who they are and what they want to be. Asuka Watanabe’s “a-ha moment” came when she became a Bonner leader, which enlightened her commitment to service. This year, her opportunity to commit to social advocacy and civic responsibility included being one of 65 students from across the country (along with her classmate, Helen Brabant-Bleakley ’18) to participate in the Debating for Democracy (D4D) National Conference in New York City. There, she learned skills required to advocate for the issues she is passionate about. “All of the issues that I have learned about in and out of the classroom, through these programs, have taught me to think and act intentionally,” she says.
