I am a Class of 2020 student with interests to pursue psychological research in the future. I joined Professor Lawrence’s research group in order to gain research experience and make a difference to a very important topic. I have worked with the group for a full year and plan on continuing next year. After undergraduate college I hope to pursue research in cross cultural studies looking at the effects of media on mental health in both United States and Japan.
WHAT WAS VALUABLE ABOUT THE EXPERIENCE
Doing research under professor Lawrence gave me a big opportunity to be involved and actually conduct parts of the experiment. The interviews were a very personal and valuable experience as I got to understand, first hand some of the trauma that students went through as a result of their loss.
THE COOLEST PART OF THE EXPERIENCE
The coolest part of my experience was going to the Association of Death Education and Counseling (ADEC) 40th annual conference in Pittsburgh with Professor Lawrence. The experience was one like any other. I gained poster presenting skills and presentation knowledge in general. I met many people who study this subject and have their own reasons for pursing research in this field. It was a cool experience that I would have never gotten the chance to do if I hadn’t done this research.
WHO I MET THAT MADE A DIFFERENCE
I met a lot of people through this research. Professor Lawrence is amazing for wanting to utilize her research to create a very important program that will train school personnel to better handle loss. I think it will truly make a difference. My fellow research assistants all worked hard together and I believe we did a great job together at COSA. Finally, many of the interviewees in our experiment that I met, despite only talking to them for a short period of time, seem to think that I have made a difference in some way by doing this research. I am touched and I am glad that people think the research we do is important.
