Major Gifts Officer




The position of Major Gifts Officer (MGO) will focus on engaging and reconnecting alumni, parents, and friends to the College through personal, professional and philanthropic involvement, and implement strategies that help secure gifts of $10,000 or more for the College. This successful individual will have expertise in building and managing relationships and meaningful engagement opportunities with a goal of raising financial support for the initiatives put forward by the Board of Trustees and leadership of the College. The Major Gifts Officer will manage a portfolio of 120 to 150 prospects located primarily in the Western region of the US (CA, AZ, WA, OR, NV, HI, CO, UT, NM, ID, MT). The ideal candidate will either reside in this area of the country and work remotely from Ursinus or will travel extensively throughout the year to ensure proper management of his/her portfolio while also working collaboratively with colleagues in the Advancement Office. In addition, the Major Gifts Officer will work with high level volunteers to create and implement plans that result in major gifts for the College. The Major Gifts Officer also acts as the liaison between the Major Gifts team and the Director of Leadership Giving in ensuring that there is an appropriate coordinated effort between the two areas in identifying and managing prospects that are at the 1869 Society level of Annual Fund giving in order to elevate said prospects and donors at an appropriate time to the Major Gifts team for assignment to a Major Gifts officer.


  • Create opportunities to conduct face-to-face and/or online (Zoom, Skype, FaceTime) meetings and develop strategic documents for the purposes of cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding an assigned portfolio of approximately 150 current and prospective donors according to best practice standards.
  • Document all contacts in Raiser’s Edge per established Advancement Office guidelines, policies and procedures.
  • Manage donor relationships according to Advancement Office’s established prospect management guidelines, policies and procedures.
  • Create detailed cultivation/solicitation/stewardship plans for the assigned prospective prospects and donors each year and prepare briefing documents when needed.
  • Conduct personal visits (in-person or online) independently or with key volunteers/college staff/college faculty with 10-15 donors and donor prospects each month.
  • Work to achieve yearly revenue goal; work with department colleagues to identify, qualify, and assign new major gift prospects; work collaboratively with colleagues to plan cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies/activities for current and prospective donors.
  • Develop a thorough knowledge of Ursinus College history, academic and extracurricular programs, and its faculty, students and administration; maintain a thorough understanding of the College’s current priorities and initiatives of the faculty and administration.
  • Attend and support appropriate alumni and donor engagement events related to assigned responsibilities; participates in departmental and professional training programs to increase expertise in profession.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience as a proven and successful gifts officer closing gifts of $10,000 or above.
  • The successful candidate should possess a track record of success in fundraising, financial services, marketing/sales, educational management or other directly related advancement or development area.
  • A bachelor’s degree is required with a preference for one in communications, financial services, marketing/sales, educational management or fundraising.
  • Self-starting strategic thinker whose hallmark qualities include being persistent, being personable, and possessing a desire to succeed.
  • Must possess exceptional written and verbal communication skills and an ability to relate to a variety of people of all ages and backgrounds.
  • A personal commitment to excellence and the mission of a top-tier college of liberal arts, and the ability to work in a goal-oriented environment are required.
  • A valid driver’s license and use of personal car.
  • Ability to sit for long periods at personal computer performing related functions.
  • Availability and flexibility to travel as needed.
  • Ability to work evenings and/or weekends as necessary.

Departmental Accountabilities:

  • Works collaboratively with colleagues and team members in the Advancement office and throughout the College. Participates in Advancement Office meetings and other key College staff meetings.
  • Provides support to office leadership, as needed, for priority projects. Serves to help educate faculty and staff about the Advancement office and its mission and goals.
  • Possesses knowledge and experience with computer programs that support the Advancement Department including Microsoft Office programs and Raiser’s Edge.
