Kate Keppen is an easily recognized face on campus. As the director or sustainability, Kate is present at many campus activities and events, she leads the Sustainability Fellows and staffs the occasional farmers market among many other things. However, Kate thinks most people would be surprised that she is in fact an introvert “Yes, the person who has the loudest speaking voice in the room and who always jumps at the chance to get in front of the room to talk about sustainability is at her core an introvert” MORE
A 2005 graduate of Ursinus, Kate studied Environmental Studies and went on to earn a master’s degree from the University of Delaware. She went on to spend the next decade happily working for environmental positions with non-profits and local governments. Then Ursinus came …
“I was working at a job I adored, loved, and never imagined leaving when I saw the advertisement for the Director of Sustainability. At that point in my life, I had been able to better understand what an opportunity an Ursinus education provided for me.” The value of her undergraduate experience at Ursinus had become even more clear to Kate. “I realized that most schools do not give students the opportunity to reflect on what is important to them and then support them to lead intentional lives.”. That made the opportunity a perfect fit. I jumped at the chance to be part of this community that empowers its students. I felt that the position drew on many of my strengths while also taking my career into a new area.
Kate’s enthusiasm for an Ursinus education continues today. One of her favorite things about working at Ursinus is that faculty and staff are “are encouraged to keep learning. It may be professional development in our own positions, through a session of CIE for staff, or just an informal conversation amongst colleagues.”
When not advocating for the environment at Ursinus, Kate can be found Hiking a local trail or at a Phillies game. In case you were wondering, Kate lists the Phillies and all the Ursinus Bears as her favorite sports teams. Visit Kate at the Office of Sustainability in Pfahler Hall 112G.
