Overview

The Human Resources Generalist (HRG) will have the primary responsibility for several key areas including performance management, training and development, and employee recognition. The position requires a proven track record of creating and implementing human resource programming that produces measurable and meaningful results. The majority of duties will require collaborating effectively with colleagues in Human Resources as well as campus partners to help identify and delivery solutions that support the college’s strategic goals. Identifies new opportunities where Human Resources can add value to faculty and staff. The position requires both visibility and responsiveness to the needs of the individuals and departments that we serve.

Responsibilities

Performance Management:

  • Facilitates the college’s performance management process, including the development of performance expectations, effective approaches to monitoring employees’ performance throughout the evaluation period, and conducting employee evaluations.
  • Administers the performance appraisal system. Identifies improved functionality. Works with HR staff, campus partners, and other stakeholders to redesign and implement system changes and upgrades.
  • Liaisons with supervisors to ensure that performance expectations are consistent with the college’s values and strategic plan. Provides assistance to supervisors in developing SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and time-related) goals.
  • Provides assistance to supervisors in preparing meaningful feedback to employees at the end of the evaluation period.
  • Develops and facilitates formal training and consultation to supervisors on performance management issues, such as addressing performance deficiencies and rewarding outstanding performance.

Training & Development:

  • Assesses professional development needs across the college and establishes a comprehensive program of activities and resources.
  • Partners with colleagues across the college to design and deliver training solutions to ensure compliance of campus/human resource policies.
  • Facilitates employee group discussions and workshops.
  • Develops training materials for both supervisory and non-supervisory programs.
  • Coordinates supervisory training initiatives.
  • Assists in the implementation of organizational assessments and identifies needs for intervention.
  • Evaluates training and development programming and offers recommendations for improvement.
  • Supports the development of employee communications to market upcoming workshops and other campus events.

Employee Recognition:

  • Designs meaningful employee recognition strategies both college-wide and at the department level.
  • Develops and conducts outreach to advertise college employee recognition programs and initiatives.
  • Assesses employee recognition programs, i.e. conducts surveys and assessments, to determine modifications.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Facilitates problem solving and is responsive to the needs of the community.
  • Influences and assists organizational change initiatives.
  • Assists departments in forecasting and planning resource needs.
  • Provides appropriate and effective advice and coaching to employees as needed.
  • Supports the Director of Human Resources in the completion of special projects.
  • Compiles data and prepares presentations on targeted human resource topics for use with multiple audiences.
  • Identifies opportunities to improve efficiencies and service within the department.
  • Strengthens knowledge base of human resource best practices on continual basis.
  • Aligns performance management process to professional development activities.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required in Human Resource Management, Business, or related field.
  • Minimum of three years of experience in a multi-discipline human resource environment (including organizational development, performance management, training and development, rewards and recognition).
  • Experience with online learning preferred.
  • Demonstrates solid understanding of the higher education environment.
  • Strategic thinking, interpersonal skills as well as strong project management acumen are essential.
  • Excellent communication skills are required including the ability to write and present effectively.
  • PHR certification preferred.
