Katherine Quanz became interested in film and media studies after (quickly) discovering that she did not enjoy working in the film industry. Her research focuses on post-production sound for film and television. Quanz is currently working on a monograph titled Satellite Sounds, which charts the development of an international network of cities that share a common style and set of techniques with Hollywood. By focusing on Hollywood’s relationship with two city-based industries, London and Toronto, she argues that audio practitioners outside of the United States sought to emulate Hollywood to attract the business of Hollywood producers. This work also seeks to highlight labor issues within the film industry.

In addition to her academic work, Quanz has extensive experience in the field of audiovisual archiving. She has held positions at Laurier Archives, the Wisconsin Center for Film and Theater Research, the Harry Ransom Center, and George Blood, L.P..
