Overview

The Associate Vice-President for Student Affairs (AVPSA) is a full-time position that reports to the Vice-President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students (VPSA/DOS). The AVPSA works across divisions to integrate co-curricular, cohort-centered, personal, and personalized pathways to achievement. The AVPSA partners on the development and implementation of interventions that enhance academic success and co-curricular learning, while promoting health, well-being, and lifelong achievement. As a champion of retention across the college, the AVPSA will work closely with academic affairs student success professionals and faculty, staff in the division of inclusion and community engagement (DICE), and the division of Health and Wellbeing (DHW) to aggregate retention data and work with institutional research on the assessment of retention programs and their positive impact on holistic student achievement. The AVPSA, as a member of the senior leadership of SA, also assists in leading crisis response.

Responsibilities

  • Retention
    • Provides visible, collaborative, cross-divisional leadership in support of retention initiatives
    • Creates and leads co-curricular, cohort-centered personal and personalized pathways for co-curricular and residential learning that enhance the academic success of students
    • Work collaboratively with the VPSA/DOS to strengthen institutional infrastructure and resources for first-generation students
    • Leads campus-wide student experience program assessment, partnering across divisions to evaluate the positive impact(s) of programs on retention
    • Provides annual report on cohort attrition including evaluation of drivers of attrition, impact(s) of interventions on attrition, and recommendations for additional programs, changes in process/procedure, and changes to existing programs to support student achievement

  • Curricular Approach/Assessment
    • Compiles yearly report on learning outcomes for SA programming including residential learning, co-curricular programs, and alignment of programming in SA with academic success programs and assessment outcomes to ensure holistic support of student success and achievement
    • Works across the division to embed a ‘curricular’ approach in programming with clearly defined and assessable learning outcomes
    • Collaborates with faculty to provide quality co-curricular and residential programming to students that bridges the Quest core curriculum (four questions)
  • Student Engagement
    • Oversees the operation of student clubs and organizations
    • Oversees student government and allocation of funding from student government to student organizations
  • Matriculation
    • Serves as the division’s liaison to enrollment management
    • Coordinates student affairs communications to incoming FY and Transfer students
    • Coordinates handoff of student information from enrollment to Student Affairs
    • Oversees orientation programs including design, implementation, and assessment of programming
  • Residence Life
    • Oversees the operation of the residential experience including residential learning programs
    • Manages reporting on occupancy and housing selection
  • Check-In
    • Leads campus-wide check-in committee in fall and spring
    • Oversees logistics for all check-ins
  • Crisis Response
    • Leads, with VPSA/DOS on-call and crisis response team including training and process/procedure development, implementation, and assessment

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree Required
  • Minimum of ten years of professional experience in higher education
  • Experience building strong, collaborative relationships with faculty and other stakeholders
  • Experience implementing co-curricular student retention strategies and working with academic affairs to support holistic student achievement
  • Ability to analyze and interpret student data and prepare actionable plans and reports for various constituencies related to student achievement
  • Familiarity with systems such as Slate, Colleague, Maxient, Star Rez, SPSS, and Microsoft Office products preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to work on multiple, complex projects; strong ability to multi-task and continually prioritize changing tasks and deliverables

While performing the duties of this job, the employee must live within a 15-minute drive to the campus as they serve as the lead crisis response personnel for student affairs.

  • Occasionally carry up to 25 pounds
  • Stand/sit for long periods of time
  • Use computer for video conferencing, work functions including data analysis, and email of the telephone and email for communication is essential
