Gene Spencer

Gene provides leadership for the college’s Information Technology environment on campus, including administrative systems, networking, systems administration, technology support, classroom technology, audio/visual support, event support, and telecommunications.

Please feel free to contact Gene with any questions or concerns you might have with information technology services and resources at Ursinus.  His energies are focused on Ursinus strategies and priorities for IT, including planning, budgets, staffing, maintaining highly-responsive services for the community, and major projects to improve the college’s information and technology environment. 

Currently, Gene is leading the college’s efforts to implement the Oracle Cloud system within the HESS Consortium’s Collective ERP program; Ursinus is the eight institution to implement this tool within this nationwide program for small private institutions.

Background

Before coming to Ursinus, Gene was an independent consultant to the higher education information technology and library communities. He focused on areas of organizational effectiveness, organizational design, leadership development, work redesign, quality customer service, collaboration between IT and library organizations, and synergies between people, information and technology.  Gene has also served in a variety of IT and joint Library/IT positions at his alma mater, Bucknell University. As a consultant, Gene worked for over one-hundred institutions on a national and international level.  

Gene currently serves on the board of the HESS Consortium and as the Chair of the Steering Committee of the HESS Collective ERP program.

Gene has been a member of the EDUCAUSE Management Institute Faculty (2004-2007), serving for the last two years as its Director.  He served on the EDUCAUSE Professional Development Committee and the EDUCAUSE 2000 program committee.  He also served for 6 years on the faculty of the CAUDIT Leadership Institute (Australia).

When not on campus, Gene can be found traveling to distant places or spending time with one of his 2 children, 3 step-children, or 5 grandchildren.
