Overview

The Chemistry Department seeks a full-time laboratory manager to oversee the safe and efficient operation of teaching and research laboratories within the department. Duties consist of preparing reagents for chemistry lab courses, stocking labs with needed supplies, carrying out chemical and equipment inventories, ordering chemicals and lab supplies, and being present to support students and faculty while lab courses are in session. In addition, the laboratory manager will be responsible for the development and implementation of safety policies and procedures to ensure a safe working environment. The ideal candidate will be able to develop good working relationships with faculty and students in the department and be an independent worker who can provide useful suggestions for improvement to laboratory procedures and operations.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare reagents and supplies requested by faculty for chemistry lab courses, including set-up and break-down of small equipment and instrumentation on an as needed basis
  • Serve as purchasing coordinator for the department, researching products and pricing, soliciting quotes, placing orders using the campus purchasing software, confirming receipt of and storing laboratory supplies, and maintaining up-to-date spreadsheet for departmental budget tracking
  • Manage student locker check-in/out, including key inventory
  • Coordinate upkeep and maintenance of laboratory facilities including periodic preventative maintenance visits with internal and external service providers
  • Inspect, perform routine maintenance, and coordinate repairs of equipment in the chemistry laboratories
  • Manage the chemical inventory system for the department by adding or removing items as needed, procuring Safety Data Sheets for all departmental chemicals and supplies, and performing an annual chemical inventory
  • Assist the EHS/Risk Manager with hazardous waste collection and ensure laboratories are complying with hazardous waste collection and other applicable OSHA and EPA/DEP regulations
  • Assist the EHS/Risk Manager with maintaining the chemical hygiene plan
  • Serve on the campus Workplace Safety Committee
  • Create and monitor safety training for student laboratory teaching assistants and student researchers
  • Oversee student workers who assist in preparation of supplies for teaching laboratories and inspect and test safety equipment
  • Interface with external groups using the laboratory facilities (for example, summer camp programs)

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or equivalent work experience
  • Knowledge of theoretical principles of chemistry and scientific laboratory equipment, materials, supplies, methods, and techniques
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent organization and record-keeping skills
  • Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office programs
  • Able to work independently with minimal supervision, and also collaboratively with students and faculty
  • Physically able to lift, move, and manipulate objects and equipment within the laboratory
  • Familiarity with the OSHA lab standard and EPA hazardous waste regulations preferred
