Chemistry

All Majors & Minors

Mary Kate McCrea

What do you think is the best feature of the Chemistry Major?

It is really difficult, but also rewarding.  The feeling that you get when you finally figure out a problem is what makes all the hard work worth it.

What were your expectations of the Chemistry Major?

I expected to learn a great deal about chemistry and be challenged regularly.  I thought that my thirst for knowledge would be quenched, but I’ve come to realize how many answers have not been found in the field, how many techniques need to be improved, etc.  There are so many questions that I want to be answered about chemistry and this desire is what will drive me in my future.  I did not expect to still have this thirst, but I am happy that I do.

What has been distinctive about your experience at Ursinus College?

The professor/student relationships are fantastic. Our faculty members are so passionate and want to help us reach that level of passion about chemistry. The level of attention we receive as students from our professors is incredible and it seems to be at a much higher level than my friends at other schools.

The fact that I was able to begin research as a freshman was unheard of by all my other friends at other institutions.  We get hands on experience much earlier in our college careers.

How prepared were you for your Independent Learning Experience?

I was very prepared in terms of chemistry for my ILE.  I learned a great deal about how the business world works and how important networking is for your career.  I have remained in contact with some of the professionals I met during my ILE and hope that down the road they will come in handy.
