Employment

Accept only authorized on-campus and off-campus employment

This school is authorized under Federal law to enroll nonimmigrant alien students. However, remember that it is your responsibility as an international student to maintain your F-1 student status while in the United States. The CIS considers unauthorized employment to be one of the most serious violations of F-1 status. If you refer to your I-20, you will see the statement: “Warning: a nonimmigrant who accepts unauthorized employment is subject to deportation.” Therefore, it is extremely important that you consult with the ISA before you accept an offer of employment or begin work, unless it is work on campus. The ISA will tell you whether or not it is possible for you to work, and if it is, he or she will assist you with appropriate paperwork. Please keep in mind that it is illegal to begin work in anticipation of being granted permission to do so – you must have permission first.

Generally, F-1 students are permitted to work a maximum of 20 hours per week during the academic term. This includes campus employment. F-1 students can work up to 40 hours per week during official college breaks. Working more than the specified hours during any given week is a violation of your student status.
