Ursinus-PVSD-Delaware Tribe of Indians Statement of Mutual Intentions
Ursinus College, the Perkiomen Valley School District (hereinafter, “PVSD”) and the Delaware Tribe of Indians commit to a partnership that increases understanding and awareness about the history and culture of the Lenape people in the Perkiomen Valley region and its surrounding communities.
In that spirit, we will endeavor to do the following:
Education and Curriculum
- Develop educational programs/programming that engage our internal and external communities in discussions that further develop our awareness and appreciation for the Lenape people and their culture.
- Explore ways to learn about Lenape values through curricular, co-curricular, and extra-curricular engagements for students, faculty, staff, and alumni.
- Establish an exchange program that enables members of our respective communities to visit each site for the purpose of engagement and education.
Resources and Representation
- Ensure representation of Lenape people, perspectives, and practices in ways that are visible in the curriculum and across the campus, such as inclusion of Lenape art and exhibits, whenever possible.
- Continue support for visits by the Lenape, including elders, leaders, and youth, by providing an apartment that accommodates one or two visitors from the Delaware Tribe of Indians, or other members of the five nations, whenever possible.
Implementation
- Schedule an annual meeting in the fall to review, discuss and outline plans for the upcoming academic year.
- Review progress on projects at the end of each academic year.
The Ursinus-PVSD-Delaware Tribe of Indians Statement of Mutual Intentions will be posted on our respective websites, along with information and resources, and other timely messages that may help to inform those within and beyond our respective communities.
Ursinus, PVSD, and the Delaware Tribe of Indians hereby support this Statement of Mutual Intentions and the continued mutual cooperation that have characterized the relationship between these entities for the length of our association with each other, on this date, April 12, 2022.
